50's Style Diner. Did I Order The Wrong Item?
I saw this place advertised in some travel guides, and when we pulled up out front it looked promising. A 1950's themed diner on Route 66 in a small town that has a railroad history museum and train on display across the street. I figured this place might be pretty good. It definitely looked authentic and was positioned in a place where something like this would have been 70 years ago.
My mistake might have been ordering the Chicken Fried Steak. First because I come from the true South, and I've had some amazing ones, but 2nd because when I think 1950's I think burgers, fries and shakes.
The location was pretty busy, the parking lot was full, and I had to park across the street at the park near the train. The small crowd dining inside had also given me high hopes of a really good meal ahead.
I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and we sat cooling off with our drinks. After a short wait the food came out and the CFS looked like it might be pretty good. I tried it and it was a disappointment. The breading was kinda bland. I suspect this chicken fried steak was of the frozen variety, and just deep fried, with gravy poured over it.
If I ever return I might give the place another go. Service was decent, food was OK, but could have been better, and prices were fair for diner food. If anything It was a cool place to stop while traveling on Route 66.
All I can say is if you visit, I'd suggest ordering something other than the Chicken Fried Steak.— Paul
