  • ★★★★½ Boudin Balls Red Beans & Rice Fried Corn Visited Dec 31, 2016

Great Roadside Stop For Southern Cajun Homestyle Food

Found this place on a brochure advertising "The Boudin Trail" with a list of places recommended for the best Boudin in Louisiana.

We made a short detour off the highway to check this place out because we were staying in nearby Lake Charles. When we arrived the place was filled with the lunch crowd. The majority of the diners were locals. We saw construction people, repair people, and police all dining there.

The restaurant is cafeteria style. You grab a tray, walk your way down and they build a plate for you. I had the Boudin Balls, Red Beans & Rice, and Fried corn. I'd had Boudin before elsewhere, but never as a giant meatball breaded and deepfried. The fried corn, I just dont see too often in Texas, and other items like pork cracklins, crawfish boudin, and crab stuffed chicken.

My boudin balls were good, with a nice crisp breading over them, moist and full of flavor on the insides, the meat a little more seasoned than what I am able to find in Texas, definitely better than the frozen type by multitudes. The red beans and rice was just decent, it wasnt the type I was hoping for but the flavor was still good. My experience has been that most of the red beans and rice I come across is the juicy type and not the beans in a thick gravy which is what I really like.

The food was good, prices were cheap, and real southern style Cajun food. Its a unique little place that you usually only find out about by talking to locals.
