Trying Mi Tierra For The First Time: Chicken Mole Enchiladas

I've lived in San Antonio for over 35 years, and this was my first visit to Mi Tierra. After reading plenty of reviews, both positive and negative, I found myself agreeing with much of what others had to say. The food is decent, but it's certainly not the best Mexican food San Antonio has to offer. Prices are noticeably higher than those at many local restaurants, although the downtown location and tourist appeal likely play a role.

The restaurant's decor was quite a surprise. It has a very strong Fiesta atmosphere, with colorful decorations throughout. The addition of Christmas ornaments alongside the flags and lights was a little confusing, though. Service was decent during our late-night visit, and we were seated immediately, although it was around 11 p.m. on a Sunday.

For my first visit, I ordered the Chicken Mole Enchiladas. The portion was reasonable but not especially generous. The mole sauce had a decent flavor, although it wasn't the style with more pronounced cocoa or peanut butter notes. The shredded chicken was moist and tender, and the enchiladas had a fair amount of filling. Unfortunately, the overall flavor was a little underwhelming.

The accompanying rice and beans were both decent but nothing special. The plate cost $12.25, which is a little more than I'd expect to pay at many other Mexican restaurants around town.

My dining companion ordered the menudo for $10.25. He felt it was better than what he'd had at some places, but still not the best. Considering menudo is generally an inexpensive dish to prepare, the price seemed higher than what we'd expect elsewhere.

As a longtime San Antonio resident, it's difficult to rate a restaurant like Mi Tierra. Its reputation, colorful atmosphere, and downtown location make it a popular destination, but the food and prices didn't stand out compared with the many other Mexican restaurants available locally. In another city, I'd probably give it a 4, and outside of Texas, it would likely earn a 5. Here in San Antonio, though, the competition is much tougher.
