The Bison Burger & Fries Delivers A Meal Full Of Flavor
While wandering the streets of Manitou, I asked a few locals, “What’s good to eat around here?” Surprisingly, two out of the three people I asked independently recommended the same thing: the bison burger at the Keg Bar. With multiple people pointing me in the same direction, I had to give it a try.
I stopped in around 9 p.m., which turned out to be a perfect time for a late-night meal. They offer their full menu until about 11 p.m., followed by a more limited bar menu later in the evening.
I already knew what I was ordering, the bison burger. There are two sizes of bison patties to choose from, and you can get chips or upgrade to fries. I went with the smaller patty, which still made a good-sized meal. I also paired the burger with a local bison golden wheat beer.
The burger took a little while to arrive, probably around 20 minutes, which was somewhat surprising considering there were only two other people dining at the time. Once it arrived, though, the wait was quickly forgotten. The fries were fresh, hot, crispy, and had good flavor.
The burger itself comes somewhat disassembled, with everything served on the side. I added all the veggies and mayo, and took my first bite. I immediately understood why so many people had recommended it. It was pretty darn good.
There was nothing fancy about the burger, and that's really what made it work. It was a toasted bun with a juicy bison patty, mayonnaise, lettuce, onion, and pickles. Combined with the fresh, crispy fries, it delivered exactly what I want from a good burger-and-fries meal. Everything had good flavor, and the bison patty was the star of the show. The meat was full of flavor, was juicy and made for an excellent burger patty.
The bar itself was pretty calm while I was there. The bartender was friendly with everyone coming and going and spent some time chatting with customers. My waitress stopped by the table several times while I was eating, although my drink did go empty toward the end of the meal. Other than a short wait to place my order and the wait for the food, the overall experience was great.
I've already recommended this place to others, and I will most likely return for another meal in the future. When multiple locals independently recommend the same dish, it's worth listening to them, and in this case, they were definitely onto something.— Paul
