Tried The CEO Burger & What They Call Onion Rings
This was my first visit to BurgerFi. I've driven past the location before but had never actually stopped to eat there. I had also seen the brand mentioned online several times, which made me curious enough to finally give it a try. Since I wanted to get a good idea of what they had to offer, I decided to order the CEO burger, made with Wagyu beef, and customized it with mushrooms. I also ordered a regular order of onion rings and an Angry Orchard cider.
The food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot. It was obvious the burger had just come off the grill and the onion rings had just come out of the fryer.
The onion rings were huge and had excellent flavor. I'd never seen onion rings made this way before, the shape and size was totally unique. The batter had a little bit of a spicy kick to it, and I'm guessing cayenne pepper was used because of the reddish tint to the coating. Despite the size of the onion pieces, they didn't have that strong raw-onion flavor. Instead, the onions were soft and had a slightly sweet flavor that worked really well with the seasoned batter.
The first thing I noticed about the burger was the branding on the bun. The meat was tender and juicy, and the toppings, & mushrooms all worked well together. The meat had good flavor, was well seasoned and grilled perfectly. Compared to the Primetime burger at Hopdoddy, I'd say the two were fairly similar in both flavor and portion size, with the BurgerFi burger possibly being a little larger.
The meal as a whole was very good, and the portions were generous. The downside was the price. My total, including the cider, was about $22, which puts it toward the more expensive end of the burger places I typically visit.
Most of the burgers at BurgerFi start around $7, with the CEO being the most expensive at about $11 by itself. Regular fries and onion rings are around $5.50, with the large size costing about a dollar more. Those prices put BurgerFi more in the restaurant-dining category for me rather than traditional fast food.
I also tried the vanilla custard at the end of the meal, which was good. It was very creamy and had a nice rich texture, possibly from being made with a higher-fat dairy base.
Overall, I was impressed with my first meal at BurgerFi. The food was hot, fresh, flavorful and generously portioned, and the burger compared favorably with some of the better burger places I've tried. I wouldn't hesitate to return, although the prices are probably what would keep this from becoming a regular stop for me.— Paul
