Mystery Menu, No Flavor, No Spices

It was my first time eating at Wahkee, and it may also be my last. The biggest problem I had was the lack of flavor in the food.

When I sat down and started browsing the menu, I noticed that many of the items didn't have descriptions explaining what they were. Some had names that weren't very familiar to me and no description at all. The bigger problem came when I asked the waiter about some of them, he wasn't able to explain what the dishes were either. That made it difficult to order anything.

I ended up ordering the "fried flat rice noodle and beef". The name sounded suspiciously similar to Pad See Ew, which is a Thai dish, and when the food arrived, that's essentially what it turned out to be.

We also ordered one of the dishes medium spicy, so I expected at least some heat or flavor from the food. Unfortunately, neither dish had much flavor at all. I started by adding some salt, then asked for some kind of spices or crushed peppers. They brought me hot oil instead. I added it to the food, but afterward the dominant flavors were basically oil and what tasted like stale chiles. I eventually added some soy sauce, which only made the food saltier without really adding the flavor I was looking for. I ended up drinking three Cokes while sitting there.

The food itself wasn't bad, aside from the lack of flavor, and the restaurant's interior was nice. Prices were also fair. The problem was simply that the food needed much more seasoning, spice, salt, and that's a pretty significant issue. This was some of the blandest Chinese food I've ever had.

I'm not sure if this was specific to the dishes we ordered or if the rest of the menu is similar. I ordered a noodle dish, while the person dining with me had combination fried rice, so we didn't get to sample a wide variety of the menu.

I might be willing to give Wahkee another try and order something completely different, but as a first experience, it was definitely underwhelming.
