  • ★★★★½ Bulgogi Fried Rice Brisket Visited Jan 10, 2020

    Bulgogi Fried Rice Was Great.

This was my first visit to this restaurant. I originally discovered it while watching it on Food TV and added it to my list of places I wanted to try. What makes this BBQ restaurant stand out, especially in Texas where there is certainly no shortage of great barbecue, is the combination of Texas BBQ and Korean cuisine.

When the restaurant originally appeared on television, it was still owned by the original owner. By the time I visited, new owners had taken over, but they have kept the menu largely the same and were given the original owner's recipes for the Korean dishes. The new owners were extremely friendly and clearly invested in what they're serving. We spent some time talking about food, recipes, and some of the dishes I've encountered at other restaurants.

They gave me a sampling of several of their BBQ offerings, including sausage, gumbo, brisket, and rib tips. Everything was excellent. The brisket was tender and moist, the sausage had great flavor, and the gumbo was particularly interesting because it contained BBQ chicken, which added a tremendous amount of smoky flavor.

While I was waiting for my food, a fresh batch of BBQ was being brought in from the pit. I was offered a rib tip, and it was incredible. The outside had a deep black crust while the inside was full of juices, incredibly tender, and packed with flavor. It was quite possibly one of the best pieces of rib meat I've ever had.

    The BBQ

I think this is where the restaurant really excels. The brisket was outstanding—thinly sliced, incredibly juicy, and tender enough that it practically melted in my mouth. It was also loaded with that deep, smoky wood flavor you want from good Texas BBQ.

The sausage had that same great smoke flavor but also had plenty of seasoning and was cooked perfectly. I have a friend who actually prefers sausage over brisket, and after trying it here, I told them this is a place they need to visit.

For my meal, I decided to eat the Korean food at the restaurant and take the BBQ home. I ordered bulgogi fried rice with cucumber kimchi along with a BBQ brisket basket with red beans and rice to go.

The bulgogi itself was good, not necessarily the best I've ever had, but putting it into fried rice was something I hadn't really encountered before and made for an interesting combination. The cucumber kimchi was also decent, although I felt it was missing just a little something.

While I had high expectations for the Korean food because of the restaurant's unique concept, it was actually the BBQ that completely exceeded my expectations.

I've had BBQ from some of the well-known Texas institutions, including Black's, Kreuz Market, and Texas Pride, and I'd put the BBQ I had here right up there with them. That's saying quite a bit for such a small restaurant.

I will definitely return, most likely with friends. If you're a BBQ fanatic and happen to be in the area, this is definitely a place I'd recommend putting on your list. The Korean-Texas BBQ combination is unique, but more importantly, the BBQ itself is seriously good.
