Pretty Good Brisket & Amazing Creamed Corn

One interesting thing I've discovered about Rudy's is that the menu can vary quite a bit between locations. Some offer chopped or pulled pork, turkey, and brisket, while others have additional items like prime rib, banana pudding, and other options. However, two things you can count on finding at every location are the brisket and the creamed corn.

The creamed corn is easily my favorite thing at Rudy's, and honestly, it's some of the best creamed corn I've had anywhere. I could sit down and eat an entire pint of it by itself. I practically have to force myself to order some brisket to go along with it! It's incredibly creamy and sweet, and I'm pretty sure it has cream cheese in it. If not, they're probably using plenty of heavy cream. Whatever the secret is, it's absolutely delicious. They'll even let you sample it before ordering, but once you taste it, I think you'll understand why I recommend getting some.

The brisket is pretty good, too. I wouldn't put it in the same league as some of the legendary Texas barbecue spots like Franklin Barbecue, Louie Mueller, or Black's, but I'd rank it a step above Bill Miller's and just below the bigger names in Texas barbecue. Rudy's also offers two barbecue sauces: a milder, semi-sweet option and another with considerably more ground pepper and a noticeable step up in heat.

The ribs have never really impressed me, and the sausage is just OK in my opinion. The brisket, on the other hand, is worth ordering, especially when paired with that creamed corn. The plates also come with bread, pickles, and onions, giving you the traditional barbecue accompaniments to go along with your meal.

One of the things I appreciate about Rudy's is that it's one of the more affordable barbecue places where you can still get a pretty good meal. The food is plated as you order, so service is generally quick, and I've never had to deal with an excessively long wait. Beverages are self-serve, which makes it easy to grab a drink and get settled in. The Schertz location has both indoor and outdoor seating and is conveniently located just off the interstate, making it a popular stop for commuters and travelers.

If you've never been to Rudy's, I'd recommend stopping in and giving it a try. It's a good option when you're looking for reasonably priced barbecue that's a step above some of the more basic chains. The brisket is good, but don't leave without ordering the creamed corn. It's the one thing that keeps me coming back, and it might just become your favorite, too.
