You Can Get 2&2 or 3&3 Enchilada & Puffy Tacos, No Sides, For Under $9.
Living in the same neighborhood my whole life, theres still little places I've never gone inside, and restaurants that I've never eaten at. This one is just a few miles from my house and after seeing a few people recommend it I decided to give it a try.
I've never thought to give the place a try because its pretty plain looking from the outside, the front of the building faces sideways, and its an older building that really lacks any curb appeal, its one of those places you always drive by, but never go in.
When I arrived I noticed the building had gotten a fresh coat of paint outside recently, guys were also restriping the parking lot, which also looked to be recently worked on.
I was seated right away, brought a menu, had my drink within a minute or two, and my food order taken pretty quick. Chips and salsa were brought out before the food, the salsa was a bit thin, but had good flavor.
While looking at the menu I noticed "combinations" were separate from "mexican platos" and that the combinations even though they were 3-4 entrees were cheaper than the plates. I assumed since the menu didnt mention rice and beans the combinations didnt include them, which is something you dont see often. I ordered the cheese enchilada puffy taco combination, which said 2 and 2. The plate came out and sure enough, 2 cheese enchiladas, 2 puffy taco, lettuce and tomato to the side, no rice, no beans, which I was perfectly fine with.
I tried the enchiladas first which looked promising, the cheese was blistered, and looked liquified. The enchiladas were good, almost good enough to land a spot in my top 5, but the cheese was a bit sharp for my taste. The gravy on the enchiladas had really good flavor, and the cheese being fully melted was a plus as well. Im assuming this was maybe a sharp cheddar of some kind, it wasn't bad, but packed more cheese flavor more than many places.
Then I tried the puffy taco, the shell had good texture, not very crispy, more soft and greasy, I opted to eat them with my fork rather than try to pick them up. The meat inside was picadillo (ground beef) with potatoes and had really good flavor, would make for good soft tacos as well. The shells reminded me of the old "Taco Hut" that used to be in the Highland Hills neighborhood.
The plate despite not having rice and beans was pretty large, and I actually struggled to finished it on an empty stomach. Prices were very affordable, my 2 enchilada 2 taco plate was $8. Sodas were cans for $1.75, a cup of ice was brought out, and mexican coke was also available, my total for my meal was $10 after tax.
Also on the menu and wall were daily specials, which included combinations with rice and beans, chicken mole, carne guisada, and enchilada plates nearly every day including weekends. The lunch specials averaged $6.75-$8. It also appeared they serve breakfast all day long. I heard another table order eggs.
The restaurant insides were your average 1980s or maybe earlier mexican restaurant, nothing fancy, and definitely not modern. I didnt really have much interaction with staff, I think I arrived as the morning/lunch staff switched off to an afternoon evening crew. But my food came out in less than 10 minutes.
The food was very good, I would definitely go back, portions were large, prices were cheap, and the flavor of everything better than many places. Biggest deduction in scores here was the dining atmosphere. I usually get my orders to-go.
The restaurant is located on S Presa Street, nearly directly across from the old Hot Wells hot springs hotel.— Paul
