Decent Steak, Enchiladas Were So-So, Roasted Creamed Corn Was Good
This was my first visit to Hermann Sons Steak House. I had driven past the restaurant many times over the years and always wondered what it was like. My friends treated me to a birthday dinner near their home, so I finally had a chance to find out.
I decided to order the Longhorn Special - Steak and Enchilada plate because I was curious about how the enchiladas would be at a steakhouse that clearly isn't a Mexican restaurant.
The steak was very good. Mine was cooked exactly as I ordered, with a nice pink center, a good char on the outside, and plenty of juiciness. My friends ordered steaks as well, and theirs were cooked just as perfect. We actually commented on how the kitchen got the steaks right, because a lot of places don't consistently nail a medium-rare steak.
The enchiladas were more of a mixed bag. The meat and chili sauce had a strong chili-powder flavor, while the meat itself was lean and a little dry. It wasn't terrible, but I probably wouldn't order the enchiladas again. Fortunately, the steak was good enough to make up for that part of the meal.
We actually changed our side choices at the last minute after noticing the roasted cream corn. Both my friend and I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad we did. It had a really good flavor and was unlike most creamed corn I've had. The closest comparison I can make is a combination of Mexican street corn and Korean baked corn. It was a unique side and definitely worth trying.
We also ordered a sampler of fried mushrooms, onion rings, and zucchini. All three were really good, and the portion was huge. The small order was easily enough to feed three people, with several pieces left over. I can't imagine how much food comes with the large order.
Prices were fair, and the service was pretty good. We arrived fairly close to closing, shortly after a large rush had come through, so the restaurant was winding down for the evening.
Overall, I had a good experience at Hermann Sons Steak House. The steak was the highlight, the roasted cream corn was an unexpected surprise, and the fried appetizer sampler was an excellent portion for the price. I'd definitely consider coming back to try some of the other items on the menu. Maybe a better steak next time.— Paul
