General Chicken Was Good, Large Portions In My To-Go box
This was my first time trying this place, and I was pleasantly surprised. The portions are large, and everything I tried had good flavor. For my first visit, I decided to try the Dragon & Phoenix, which is a combination of general chicken and shrimp with vegetables.
When I got back to the office space, I found the takeout container was packed completely full, with the lids barely snapping closed. I ordered meals for 3 people and everyone's containers were the same way. I ended up getting about three meals out of the order, because I also ordered a bowl of egg drop soup and an eggroll, which I ate with my first portion.
The General Chicken was decent, with plenty of sauce that was sticky and caramelized onto the fried batter. The shrimp with vegetables had a nice assortment of vegetables that tasted fresh and had good flavor. But the 2 were packed into the same container, the general chicken put in over the top of the shrimp and vegetables, first making me think there wasn't much in the container, and then having the 2 flavors comingled.
The egg drop soup was particularly good. However I dont think it was egg drop. It looked more like hot and sour soup, so thats what I reviewed it as. It had a lot of flavor, tasted freshly made, and contained some large pieces of egg white, along with mushrooms and tofu.
The eggroll was crispy, a little greasy, but very tasty.
I wouldn't say this is an amazing Chinese restaurant, but it's definitely a step above the typical fast-food Chinese places and better than many I've tried around San Antonio. My only real criticism was the way the two entrees were packed together. If they were packed separately, I think the General Chicken would have held up much better.
I was impressed enough that I'll be returning to try some of the other menu items, as I have a feeling some of them may be even better. But these were good enough for some decent to-go Chinese food.— Paul
