Good Seafood Boil, A Bit Pricey
This was my first visit to Hook & Reel, and I had to try one of the crab boils since I'm always on the search for a better one.
I was part of a large group, and we ended up ordering a little bit of everything from the menu. We started with breadsticks, calamari, raw oysters, soups, and cheese sticks. I tried the calamari, which was OK but not particularly impressive. The breadsticks, on the other hand, were really tasty, as were the pork rinds they brought out when we first arrived.
For my main meal, I went with a small boil that included crab clusters, shrimp, and sausage. I chose the Original Cajun seasoning at medium spice. The level of heat was good, and the seasoning had good flavor, but there was still something missing that kept it from standing out compared with some of the better boils I've had.
Compared with some of the best crab boils I've tried, this one was definitely up there, but I wouldn't put it in my top three. The main differences came down to the overall flavor and the amount of sides included. My boil only came with one ear of corn and two potatoes, which seemed minimal for the amount of seafood.
I'd be willing to come back and try another seasoning, since there are several options and the seasoning can make a big difference with a boil. One thing to keep in mind is that the price can climb quickly as you add more items. If you're dining with a group, it probably makes more sense to order a larger boil with everything you want and split it rather than ordering several smaller boils individually.
Service was good, the selection was extensive, and the overall quality of the food was good. I enjoyed the experience and would be willing to give it another try, especially to see how another seasoning compares.— Paul
