Came In Search Of Carne Adovada & Sopapillas
This was my first time eating here, and the visit got off to a somewhat confusing start. When I walked in, I stood at the register where there were three people working nearby, but no one offered to seat me. I can only assume they thought I was waiting for other people to join me.
Once I was seated, a few minutes passed before a waitress apologized and took my drink order. Almost immediately after she walked away, another waitress came over, introduced herself, and asked if she could take my drink order as well.
The first waitress eventually brought my drink, and noticed there were no chips and salsa, she said they would be right out. When she returned to take my food order, she noticed again and went to get them. I was interested in trying the Red Chile Pork and had also wanted to try the enchiladas, but was told there wasn't an option to get both. I ordered the Red Chile Pork instead, hoping it might be similar to New Mexican carne adovada, which is a red chile pork dish.
About 15 minutes later, my food arrived. The pork was a mix of very tender and moderately tender pieces, and the guajillo sauce which had good flavor, although it cooled down pretty quickly. My main criticism would be that the meat didnt really soak up the sauce, but was more just coated in it. The rice was okay, the beans weren't average, and the fresh tortillas were good. Portions on everything were reasonable, not too large or small.
The menu said the meal included a guacamole salad, but it was missing from my plate. Since I'd photographed the menu for my review, I asked the waitress about it. She initially said she didn't think it came with it, after another back and forth she and me telling her I had checked the menu, she went to get it. It eventually arrived about halfway through my meal.
For dessert, I ordered the sopapillas. They were the flat style, fried almost like flour tortillas and served with honey and powdered sugar. When the waitress asked how they were, I said they were different, and she mentioned that other customers had said the same thing.
The waitress did bring me to-go boxes and a drink to take with me. Overall, the food was decent, but nothing really stood out, and it wasn't quite what I was looking for. The service had quite a bit of confusion throughout the visit, which took away from the experience. It wasn't a horrible visit, but it wasn't one that left me eager to return either.— Paul
