Stopped In To Try Another Lunch Special.
I've heard so many things about this restaurant over the years. It's a San Antonio landmark, often described as "the restaurant up on stilts." Despite living in San Antonio my entire life, this was my first time eating here. I've eaten at other restaurants owned by the same family, but several people told me the food here was different and that I needed to try it for myself.
I stopped in for lunch while working in the area and ordered the lunch combo with beef and broccoli, chicken with garlic sauce, and fried rice. I also added an egg roll.
The chicken with garlic sauce had good flavor and came with a decent amount of red peppers, which isn't something I normally see in this dish. The beef and broccoli was good as well, although I wouldn't call it fantastic. It had more of an average flavor profile, but was still a solid dish. Overall, everything I tried was good.
My waiter was extremely friendly and talkative. The staff would chat with the tables as they delivered food and refilled drinks, and the service overall was excellent.
The food came out hot and amazingly fast. The portion was huge, and the lunch special was a great value. The flavors were generally very similar to the other restaurants owned by the family, and there was also a good selection of items to choose from.
My only real criticism was the management style. The waitstaff seemed to be constantly watched by management, and I saw one employee get scolded for something. When my order came out with the wrong item, I was told the wontons had to go back before I could receive the egg roll, otherwise management would say something. That made me wonder what was going to happen to the wontons. When I went to pay, I was also told that if I paid cash, I had to take it to the register because the waitstaff wasn't allowed to handle cash. It all came off as very odd.
Overall, though, I had a good experience. The service was excellent, the food was good, the portions were generous, and the prices were fair.— Paul
