  • ★★★★½ Cheese Echilada Spanish Rice Refried Beans Crispy Taco Chalupa Guacamole Mikes Super Plate Visited May 4, 2026

Mikes Super Plate Is A Lot Of Food And All Of It Pretty Good

On this visit, I ordered the Mike's Super Plate. I'm not sure if I've had this particular plate before, but I was hungry, couldn't decide what I wanted, and figured this would give me a little bit of everything.

The plate, or should I say plates, came out with quite a bit of food. The meal included a cheese enchilada with chili con carne, rice, beans, a crispy beef taco, a cup of guacamole, a small salad, tortillas, and a bean-and-cheese chalupa. The chalupa came out on a separate plate and wasn't included in the photo.

I ate for quite a while and still had food left over. The cheese enchiladas here are decent, not bad, but not something I'd consider exceptional. The rice is decent, the beans are good, and the crispy tacos are about average. The guacamole has good flavor and is great with just about anything, including the complimentary chips.

Overall, this is just a good, filling meal that doesn't cost a whole lot. If you're the type of person who wants a little bit of this and a little bit of that rather than ordering one specific dish, it's a good option. There's enough food here to leave you feeling full.

I wouldn't say that any one item on the plate really stands out, but everything is at least average in flavor, and there's a lot of variety for the price. And, of course, the fact that the restaurant is open 24 hours makes it an even more convenient option when you're hungry at an odd hour.

  • ★★★★½ Beef Fajita Plate Visited Nov 26, 2021

Good Place For Late Night Mexican Food

The biggest draw here is that Mama Margies is open 24 hours, making it a great option when you're looking for a late-night meal. It's generally much quieter than some of the other 24-hour Mexican restaurants and bars around town, and I think the food is a step above the typical fast-food options.

On this visit, I ordered the beef fajita plate, which comes with rice, beans, and a small salad to use with the tacos. There's also an open salsa bar with cilantro, onions, several salsas, chips, lime, and other toppings available so you can customize your meal.

The fajita meat was cooked well and had a good grilled flavor. It was tender, and the portion was a good size—enough meat to make at least three good-sized tacos. The combination of the fajita meat, fresh toppings, and salsa made for a pretty satisfying meal.

This location has consistently been fairly quiet whenever I've dined here late at night. I've never had a bad experience, and at one point I was visiting regularly when they were offering 99-cent tacos. It's also worth keeping an eye out for special promotions, particularly around events like the rodeo or Fiesta.

I've tried several of the plates here over the years, and while I wouldn't say it's the most exceptional Mexican food in San Antonio, it's definitely decent and reliable. Prices are fair, portions are a good size, and dine-in customers have access to self-serve chips and salsa.

With several locations around town that are open 24 hours, Mama Margies is a convenient option when you need a late-night Mexican meal. The quieter atmosphere, reasonable prices, and better-than-fast-food quality make it a place I don't hesitate to visit when I'm looking for something to eat late at night.
