They Have Calf Fries But They Werent Great. Chicken Fried Steak Was Just OK.
I was debating where to eat dinner while staying at the hotel, and looked up all the menu's for the restaurants in the building. I saw Toby Keiths Bar & Grill, and was surprised to see they had calf fries on the menu.
Of course I had to order them, not my first time eating them, but they are kinda hard to find, and I've had the range of very good to bad on these. A Texas staple, the chicken fried steak was my main course though.
I was seated promptly, the menu had an excellent selection of items on it, and the prices while not cheap were reasonable, especially for a restaurant inside a casino with very few options in the area.
The food arrived quick, but it was between lunch and dinner, so not exactly the busiest time of day.
The calf fries while not the best I've had were decent, but the serving size was a bit small. They came piled on top of fries, which I didnt notice mentioned on the menu. At $10 I had expected a large order of them like I've received at other steak houses, but this was priced out as a small meal with the fries as a buffer, making the portion of meat a lot smaller. The calf fries were breaded with an interesting batter, it had a spice and good seasoning to it, which was the saving grace for them as the calf fries themselves were small strips that reminded me of fried clams. The pieces were a bit smaller than at most places
The chicken fried steak I ordered was decent, but again not excellent, the flavor was good, gravy was good, portion size was fair, not a huge steak, just average sized. It came with 1 side instead of 2 which I found a bit odd. For my side I ordered the cream corn, which was a surprise of its own, the cream corn was more like Santa Fe style corn. It had red and green peppers and cheese added to the corn. Nothing like the cream corn I normally get at a steak or BBQ restaurant in Texas.
Overall the meal was decent. Flavors were interesting, nothing that stood out as amazing, but nothing I would say was a total disappointment other than the bite sizes and portion size of the calf fries.
It was a decent place to eat, not my favorite for the price within the building. But a decent dinner option none the less.— Paul
