Some Of The Best BBQ Brisket in San Antonio
Everyone knows about Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Louie Mueller in nearby Taylor, and the famous barbecue spots in Lockhart, such as Black's and Smitty's. What a lot of people don't realize is that San Antonio has Texas Pride BBQ, and in my opinion, it's right up there with some of the best barbecue in Texas. I would put the brisket here up against some of the better-known places in Lockhart, and I'd even put it in the same conversation as places like Franklin and Louie Mueller.
If you're a barbecue fanatic, Texas Pride is a place you really need to try. One of the things I especially like about it is that they offer a much wider variety of sides than many of the traditional Texas barbecue joints. The cheesy potatoes are excellent and are one of my favorite sides here. And if you have room for dessert, the pecan cobbler is an absolute must. It's easily one of the best pecan cobblers I've had.
As for the brisket, if you've never been to a traditional Texas barbecue joint, there's an important distinction to understand when ordering. They may ask whether you want "lean or moist," and your answer determines which part of the brisket you get. If they don't ask, make sure you tell them which you prefer, because otherwise you may end up with the leaner meat. Personally, I prefer the moist brisket, with plenty of marbling, some fat around the edges, and lots of juice. To me, that's what makes great brisket.
Texas Pride serves the barbecue wrapped in paper, which you take back to your table and unwrap yourself. There are pickles, onions, and both sweet and spicy barbecue sauces available at the bar in the dining area, so you can add whatever you like and dig in.
There are a few sides that I wouldn't recommend, though. The German potato salad isn't the traditional warm German-style potato salad with pickles, vinegar, and sugar that I was expecting. Instead, it's a cold potato salad made with mayonnaise and red-skinned potatoes. The creamed corn was also off during my visit. It seemed to have some kind of jalapeño juice or pickled flavor mixed into it, giving the corn a sour, pickled taste. If that's not how it's normally prepared, then I may have simply gotten a bad batch, but everyone else I was eating with agreed that the flavor seemed off.
Despite those few disappointments, the brisket and some of the other sides more than make up for it. After eating here, you can decide for yourself, but in my opinion, Texas Pride is hands-down one of the best barbecue spots in San Antonio. I would put it up against many of the famous barbecue joints around Lockhart and consider it good enough to be mentioned alongside some of the top barbecue restaurants in Texas.— Paul
