Trying The Sopapillas Here For The First Time
I hadn't noticed the sopapillas on the menu before, but I'm always on the hunt for good ones. The problem is that just about every restaurant seems to have its own interpretation of what a sopapilla should be. I've had flat ones, thin and crispy ones that were almost like chips, and large, round discs that were essentially fried flour tortillas and more like buñuelos. With so many variations out there, finding the style I really enjoy can be a bit of a challenge.
The ones served here were rectangular and slightly puffed up, although they didn't inflate enough to create a large pocket of air inside. They were about average in thickness, so they weren't paper-thin and crispy, but they also weren't overly thick or doughy. The texture leaned more toward the crispy side.
Personally, I prefer sopapillas with a thicker shell that develops a nice golden outer layer while still having a soft, doughy interior. I like them large enough to tear in half or poke a hole in so I can pour honey inside, then press them flat between my fingers. That's my ideal sopapilla, and these didn't quite fit the bill.
That said, they weren't bad at all. They just weren't the style I was hoping for. I'd still order them again, though, since they make a decent snack or a nice dessert to finish off a meal.— Paul
