  • ★★★★☆ Western Bacon Cheeseburger Jalapeno Popper Bites Waffle Fries Dbl California Burger Visited May 5, 2023

Burger Was Decent, Service Was Fast

I’ve been eating at this location for a long time, mainly because it was one of the few Carl’s Jr. locations conveniently located near San Antonio. Unfortunately, over the years, rising prices on the burgers and the removal of some of my favorite menu items, including the Teriyaki Burger a few years ago, have gradually pushed me away from the chain.

The location itself has always been pretty good. It’s usually very clean, the service is prompt, and my orders have consistently been accurate.

On this visit, I ordered the Double California Burger Meal With Waffle fries. The order was ready and brought to my table in about four minutes, so the service was extremely fast. The burger seemed super small, its only saving grace being that it was a double meat. The waffle fries were fresh and had good flavor, but the burger was a pretty disappointing burger visually and size wise. Its flavor was decent, but not great.

Before leaving I put in a to-go order. A Western Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of cheddar-jalapeño poppers. The order again was out in just a matter of minutes. I will say they are quick getting the orders out at this location.

I ate that meal later in the day. The cheddar-jalapeño poppers were good, with a cheddar-jalapeño filling that went well with the western burger. The burger comes with two slices of bacon, onion rings, cheese, and BBQ sauce. It had decent flavor and is still one of the better Western-style burgers you’ll find at a fast-food restaurant. Everything was accurate, it had good flavor and the portion size on this burger was better than the California burger. The Western Burger is about $6 where the Double Californian is $3.50. However I didn't see anywhere on the menu it mentioned the size difference in patties.

The Carl’s Jr. is located inside the Love’s Travel Center, which makes it a convenient stop when traveling through the area. I still had a good experience with the food, cleanliness, and service, but the combination of higher prices and the loss of my favorite menu items has made it harder for me to justify returning. After all these years, this may have been my last visit.
