Regional Cuisine - Parisa With A Bit of Heat
I've tried parisa from a variety of places now in the Hondo an Castroville areas, and as of this review this is my favorite so far. Silver creek offers a wide variety of wild game meats, including quail, alligator, & deer. But the item I frequently stop for is the regional item Parisa.
Parisa is a dish made to eat semi-raw. It consists of ground meat that has been blended with shreded cheese, onions, green peppers and cured with lime. The mixture is traditionally eaten on saltine or butter crackers. Its a popular item at weddings and other events.
Silver creek offers thier version of this dish in both a regular and spicy version. The spicy version is mixed with a bit of ghost pepper otherwise known as jalokia. On my first visit I was a bit concerned this was going to be super hot, because jalokia is one of the worlds hottest peppers, but after buying it over a half dozen times now I can say, the majority of the batches have been of a medium spiciness. I did have one that was a bit hotter, but none were of a spiciness I would even consider hot.
The parisa here has great flavor, and a proportion of cheese to meat. The regular and the spicy are both really good, and the price for the containers is a decent price for the portion size.
The only photo I have at the moment is of a half eaten pint. Because as soon as I make it to the car Im cracking open the crackers and eating in the parking lot. If you've never had it and your an adventurous eater, this is a definite must try.
In addition to the great parisa, the store has a fridge up front with craft sodas, 2 walls of refridgerators packed with wild game meat, sausages, and other regional items. Its a great place to pick up some unique BBQ items.— Paul
