Decent AYCE Sushi, But Didnt Find A Favorite Item.

I was totally unaware that the IHOP at Rolling Oaks Mall had turned into a sushi buffet until a friend of mine told me. The following week they were planning to eat dinner there, so I tagged along to try this new restaurant out.

The buffet was priced about average for AYCE sushi at $32.
The goal was to try as many items as possible which is a bit easier with a table of people to split everything with.

The list isnt complete, as we tried a lot of items, I didnt get photos of everything, and forgot to photograph the menu myself.

The onion soup was pretty much just liquid, I didnt see any onion, it had no texture, was simply broth. The Angel tears were pretty decent, good flavor, good texture, tolerable heat, not overly spicy to me (I think we got 1 hot pepper). The rice crispy was one of the least favorite items, no one finished it off. It was chewy, lacking any specific flavor, and just not impressive in any way. The seared steak was an item ordered towards the end of the meal, had OK flavor, not amazing, could have used some kind of sauce or marinade. The tataki beef was a limit 1 order per person. It came topped with a sauce with garlic and had a lot of flavor. We ordered 1, then ordered the other 3 orders all in 1 batch, so the photo on this review is actually 3 orders.

The Godzilla roll was the first sushi item I tried, it was decent, but left something to be desired, as it just didnt check off all the boxes. The poke salad came out, everyone kinda picked at it a bit, some of sushi in it was a bit fishy tasting to me, while others werent. It came with tuna, salmon, avocado, lettuce, and other items. It was also one of the items that were never finished by the table.

Surprisingly the philly roll, which was simple, had excellent flavor. It tasted fresh, had a nice balance of flavor, and worked well with other items we ordered as almost a palate clenser to switch between flavors.

I did not try the sunshine roll, or the honey cheese roll, which we ordered at the very end, failed to come out, and then had double come out, and after sending 1 away, returned back to our table a few minutes later.

Overall, the items were scattered in flavorand quality. There were a few items Id order again, a few I would avoid again, and some that were decent but not outstanding. For the price, I feel this buffet is decent, and offers some items not found elsewhere, while lacking in other items.

I would consider visiting again, to try some more items. I think theres still some other items on the menu that might be great.
