Good Tamales, Average Enchiladas.
I had tried some tamales from a small place in Olmos Park a few years ago, and someone said that Tomalitos was the same place. Not sure if thats true, but while driving on the west side of town, I passed Tomalitos, located just outside the Mission Baseball Field Parking Lot. I decided to make a u-turn and try it out.
I hadnt had lunch yet, so instead of just grabbing some tamales, I decided to go in for a meal. I ordered the 3 cheese enchilada plate, a Mexicanos enchilada plate was also available, which I was informed was basically queso fresco instead of American cheese.
The menu had a decent selection of items on it, prices were average, not cheap, but not what I would consider expensive for Mexican food. With most meals in the $10 range.
My food came out after maybe 15 minutes, I was eating in the off hours between lunch and dinner. Portion size was good, the enchilada sauce which was the gravy kind and had good flavor, but my cheese wasn't fully melted, nor baked, so it lacked that blistered flavor and appearance. The rice and beans were decent, nothing different. Chips and salsa were not included, and were an extra menu item.
I saw 2 other tables order tacos and other items, and both were brought red (orangey) and green sauce, I didn't receive either, and wondered why, but at this point I was already more than half way done with my meal.
I forgot to ask about the Olmos location, but the tamales were brought out towards the end of my meal. Half a dozen were $11, a full dozen was $17. Which is a little on the high side for tamales. But I had high hopes because the ones I had got in Olmos were some of my favorites.
I tried the tamales later that day, they had good flavor, the masa and seasoning was really good. The meat portion in them was a bit less than I had hoped for, with about double the masa to meat on most of them. The pork filling had good flavor, but it didnt live up to my memory of what I had got at the other place I believe was a dedicated tamale store.
These were still some of the better tamales I've had, but not sure exactly where they fall. It seems like the flavor of tamales has gone downhill over the last decade city wide. Not sure why this is the case. These would definitely make my top 10. Maybe top 5.
Now I'll say this, this appears to be one of the places where other items on the menu are more than likely better than the enchiladas. But I usually order enchiladas on my first visit to a Mexican restaurant. I saw other items being brought out which were much more visually appealing.
