Kung Pao Brussel Spouts? Also a Sirloin & Crab Cake.
It had been quite a while since I last dined at a Bonefish Grill, so when we found ourselves with a gift card while visiting Florida, we decided to give the Bradenton location a try. I ordered the Sirloin & Maryland Crab Cake combo, served with their signature garlic whipped potatoes and an upgraded side of the Kung Pao Brussels sprouts. These were all new menu items for me at Bonefish, and I was curious to see how they’d measure up.
The restaurant itself had a cozy, upscale feel with dim lighting and candles on each table, setting a fine dining atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service didn’t quite match the ambiance. When we arrived, we noticed some employees gathered outside, seemingly on a smoke break, which didn’t make for a welcoming first impression. Throughout the meal, service was sporadic; drink refills were infrequent, and our server only checked on us a few times—once to take the order, again to deliver the food, a quick check-in during the meal, and finally to process the bill.
As for the food, I’d say it was underwhelming compared to other meals I had on this trip. The steak was just decent—cooked to the requested temperature but lacking any standout flavor. The Maryland crab cake was a real letdown; it had a mushy texture and didn’t deliver the rich, savory taste I was hoping for. The one thing it did have going for it, was that compared to some others I'd eaten on this trip it was the least fishy tasting of them all. Surprisingly, the Kung Pao Brussels sprouts ended up being the highlight of the meal. They had a unique, flavorful glaze and a nice mix of textures with crushed nuts sprinkled on top, which added an interesting twist I hadn’t seen with Brussels sprouts before.
All in all, the meal was decent, but given the price, I feel there are many other restaurants I’d choose before returning to Bonefish Grill. While nothing was outright bad, the food and service simply didn’t justify the cost. For a place with an inviting and upscale atmosphere, I expected a bit more on the culinary and service fronts.
