Decent Italian Sub Sandwich - Had Fresh Flavor, Was Decently Sized & Priced Well
During my trip to Florida, I made sure to try a "Pub Sub," the popular nickname for sandwiches from the Publix grocery store chain. These subs are often praised as some of the best sandwiches you can get. After reading about them in various "best of Florida" lists and newspaper articles, I made it a point to try one before leaving the state.
I opted for a half-size Italian sub, which is known to be one of the better sandwiches from the Publix deli. The Italian comes packed with Genoa salami, Tavern ham, capicola, provolone cheese, an assortment of fresh vegetables, and Italian dressing, all served on a freshly baked roll.
Ordering is straightforward, just like at any sandwich shop—everything is made to order, then cut and wrapped with the option to make it a meal with chips and a drink. I was doing a beach tour that day, driving down Florida’s western coast, and I stopped at a Publix near Venice, FL, to try this well-known sub.
I unwrapped my sandwich in the car, snapped a photo, and took my first bite. I’ll be honest—I'm not much of a sandwich person. I've had a few Italian subs that I absolutely loved, including one just three weeks earlier, and I was curious to see how this would stack up. While the Pub Sub was pretty good, it didn’t quite reach the top spot for me.
The vegetables were undeniably fresh and crisp, and you could taste that in every bite. The serving of meat was generous, and the bread was soft and freshly baked. However, there was something missing in the overall flavor. I even asked the deli worker to prepare it with the most popular toppings and cheese, but it still fell a bit short compared to some of the other Italian subs I’ve had.
That said, the sandwich was still very good, and it made for a satisfying meal on the road trip. The convenience of finding a Publix almost anywhere in Florida definitely adds to the appeal. It’s quick, probably healthier than many other options, and a solid sandwich overall.
Did it live up to the hype of being a "Florida gem"? In my opinion, there are better sandwiches out there, but they’re not as easy to find around the corner from your house, your work, or the beach. For that reason, I’d give the Pub Sub a 10/10 for location and a 9/10 flavor wise.
