Disappointed - Local reviews show the food has changed.
Surprisingly, despite living in San Antonio my entire life, I had never eaten at MK Davis. When friends heard this, they couldn’t believe it—many insisted that MK Davis served one of the best chicken fried steaks in town. So, I decided to see for myself.
The restaurant is located on N Flores, just outside downtown San Antonio, and it draws a decent lunch crowd with specials like the $9.99 Chicken Fried Steak. Open since 1956, MK Davis has clearly built a loyal following, as evidenced by its ample overflow parking behind, beside, and even across the street at two corners.
I was seated quickly, my order was taken, and brought out fairly quick. I started with the side salad. All the ingredients tasted fresh and the thousand island dressing had a unique twist, possibly from a hint of paprika, which gave it a little extra flavor.
**The Chicken Fried Steak**
The chicken fried steak was a decent size, topped with milk gravy, and served with a thin crust and a side of fries. However, from my first bite, the steak felt oddly familiar—almost like the chicken fried steaks I’ve had at other places. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a good thing, as it reminded me of the kind you get from frozen patties. The meat had the texture of a processed ground patty and tasted similar to the versions I’ve had in sandwiches at snack bars, casino diners, or even from a grocery store. It didn’t come close to the quality I’ve experienced at other San Antonio restaurants known for their chicken fried steak.
The fries, on the other hand, were good—crispy, hot, and fresh. The meal was reasonably priced, and I left feeling full, but I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. The chicken fried steak simply wasn’t what I’d call the best, or even close.
**Google Reviews**
After the meal, I was genuinely puzzled, so I decided to check out recent Google reviews. Many people shared my sentiment, noting that the chicken fried steak had changed and was no longer what it used to be. Some reviews even described it as the "worst chicken fried steak I've ever had," mentioning issues like bad flavor and chewy meat—all from the past four months.
**Overall Impresion**
I’m not sure what changed, but I agree with the recent reviews: the chicken fried steak was definitely not up to par. Since I had never tried it before, I can’t speak to how it used to be. Sadly, my experience didn’t live up to the hype. It wasn’t so bad that I’d never give it another chance, but it certainly wasn’t good enough to draw me back anytime soon. The prices were reasonable, and the service was friendly, but in the end, the food fell short.
**Please Comment**
I’d love to hear from others who have dined at MK Davis recently—did you have a similar experience with the chicken fried steak? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
