Fried Fish & Tartar Sauce - This is the spot. Yes its Square. But its Good.
Hardly a new place to eat, Freds Fish has been around a long time. You always see people joking about it being a front for some operation, and how theres rarely a line for food. On this visit I had 2 cars in front of me at the drive thru. I rarely see people go inside, in fact I dont even know if theres a place to sit at this location despite my having purchased food from it over a dozen times in the last 2 decades.
Freds Fish is well, fast food fish? its not like Long Johns, and its probably closer to Luby's fish. The crust on the fish isnt crispy or crunchy, but more a soft breading that has very little flavor as far as spices go, you really just get the clean flavor of the fish.
But a must is the tartar sauce, which is very thin, and I would guess contains garlic and maybe a hint of horse radish? its what makes this fish.. Fred's Fish. If you dont purchase the small container of tarter sauce for the extra $1.60 you'll get generic packets in your bag, but they wont compare to the unique flavor of the in-house sauce.
The fries come along with your fish, I ordered the 3 piece this visit. For the fries, 3 fish, a lemon wedge and bread, the meal cost about $7.70. With the portion of tartar sauce, it came to about $9.50. You can eat the fish by itself of as a sandwich.
As far as other items at Freds, I don't recommend the oysters, as I've ordered them in the past and they were tiny, dime sized, were not cleaned, and for the price were not worth the money. I've never tried the chicken, so I cant comment on that. The big draw here is the rectangular slices of fish.
Not sure what else to say about Fred's. The fish isn't going to change your life, its not going to ruin you for fish everywhere else, but it will give you a new perspective on fast food fish. Its a different style, and flavor than other places, and its worth a try as its reasonably priced compared to fish elsewhere. Its a San Antonio icon, and urban legend all in one. Its something every San Antonian should experience at least once.— Paul
