Great BBQ For A Travel Center - Prices Are A Little High - But Flavor Is Good
I've eaten Buccee's BBQ sandwiches in the past, but decided to give it another try with the goal of reviewing it, and ranking it against other BBQ places.
Now, Buccees is hardly a BBQ restaurant, but they sell a lot of BBQ sandwiches, and charge a premium for them. A regular chop Brisket sandwich was $8.50, while the XXL version I think was about $13.
I circled the BBQ counter after picking up a sandwich and didnt see onions or pickles, so I asked the employee working the counter if they had any. To my surprise the answer was "no, we don't carry them" which is crazy since Buccee's actually sells their own brand of jarred pickles.
On my way to the register I saw the large cinnamon bun, with optional pecans, an item I had never tried before, so I grabbed one of those. So how were these 2 items?
**The Chop Brisket Sandwich. **I ate my sandwich in the parking lot, and it was decent.. The regular sized sandwich was filling, maybe not a meal on its own. But for non-Texans the flavor is very close to what your going to get at a dedicated BBQ restaurant. It had the mesquite smoke flavor, it tasted of bark (seasoning) and included the fatty part of the brisket. It was not lacking in flavor, but even I who loves the fatty brisket thought my sandwich was a bit too fatty. For someone who likes lean brisket, they would probably be complaining about having paid $8 for a sandwich that was half fat. Thats probably an exaggeration, but there was quite a bit mixed in.
The flavor of the sandwich is a solid 8/10. The portion size is a 8/10. The price is a 7/10, as I feel this should be a $6-7 sandwich tops.
Buccee's bakery usually serves up some great items, I've been impressed a few times by different things they had available, and since these rolls were scattered all over the store I had high hopes.. Sadly it was pretty average. I even tried microwaving it a few seconds back at my office. The icing had a tangy flavor, almost like lemon, which I'm not sure was already there or caused by the microwave, but regardless, would not even make the top 10 cinnamon rolls I've ever had.
Overall, I don't have a problem with the BBQ quality, or flavor, but the price for portion is rather high. These are tourist prices when it comes to chopped brisket.
