Authentic Chicago Style Hot Dogs & More

Chicago Hot Dogs, located near McAllister Park on Jones Maltsberger, had been on my list "to try" for quite some time, with promises of genuine Chicago Hot Dogs and Italian Beef Sandwiches. I finally had the opportunity to stop in for a long-awaited meal.

Upon arrival, I immediately noticed the delivery vehicle wrapped with a mouthwatering image of their signature Italian Beef Sandwich. Stepping inside, I was warmly greeted by Amado, the life of this operation: owner, operator, and chef behind the counter.

After reviewing the menu, I found myself torn between the iconic Chicago Hot Dog, and the San Antonio Hot Dog which happened to be on special that day. I inquired about their bestseller, and as expected it was the Chicago Dog, closely followed by the Italian Beef, which I was told was probably because its a hard to find item in San Antonio. I made my decision and ordered the Chicago Hot Dog meal, but thanks to Amado was also treated to a San Antonio Dog as well.

As I waited, I took in the ambiance of the restaurant, adorned with Chicago memorabilia, from Bulls paraphernalia to skyline snapshots, all evoking a sense of Windy City nostalgia. Custom table tops, a giant graffiti style hot dog mural on the wall, and many touches gave this place its own unique personality.

My tray arrived promptly, with two steaming hot dogs, a generous portion of crispy crinkle-cut fries, and my fountain beverage.

***First up was the Chicago Dog***, a classic combination of flavors that included a dill spear, two tomato slices, zesty sport peppers, relish, mustard, and onion, all atop a Vienna poppy seed bun & hot dog. The hot dog was neither mushy or dense, but right in the middle, with a casing that had a little snap to it. The toppings were fresh, and evenly balanced, creating a hot dog loaded with fresh flavor.

Once I had started eating the hot dog it was never sat down. I ate my way straight thru it and having barely finished it, tried my first handful of fries—crispy, golden, crinkle cut and fried up fresh.

***Then it was time to try the San Antonio Dog***. Topped with a slurry of bacon, tomatoes, peppers & onions, and a blend of spices reminiscent to a zesty salsa. I've had Sonora dogs, and other Mexican dogs at many places, but this hot dog offered a unique twist. The topping on the San Antonio, was what Amado described as a "Mexican guiso". Which for those who dont know, is basically something that is stewed, and it was what really made this hot dog unique.

While enjoying my meal, I had the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with Amado. He shared with me how 3 years ago this week he had opened the San Antonio location. Despite calling San Antonio his home, he continued to operate his Chicago location, but ultimately has made the San Antonio location his primary focus. **(3rd Anniversary March 23rd - $3 Hot Dogs)**

Our discussion meandered through the landscape of hot dog culture, reminiscing on iconic hot dog joints I had visited across the nation, each with its own unique flair—from split flat iron grilled weenies to pretzel buns & gourmet toppings. Yet, what set Chicago Hot Dogs apart was undoubtedly Amados commitment to Chicago authenticity and quality ingredients. Hot dogs made using the same ingredients and methods as in his Chicago location.

As customers came in, ordered and sat down, every table got a visit from him. You could tell that he really takes pride in the products he serves and wants every customer to leave having a positive experience. I definitely did.

If your a transplant from up north, or just like hot dogs, this is a great place to try a true taste of Windy City food & hospitality.
