Basic Buffet Items, Average Flavor.
Located in Floresville TX, on US-181, Tasty Buffet is in a shopping center on the west bound side of the hwy. I had first noticed this restaurant a few months ago while passing thru town, and looking to see if there were any places I'd never tried.
Having eaten at many Chinese buffets in many small towns around the country, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.
I stopped in on a Tuesday night, at 8pm. The buffet is open until 9:30 during the week and 10pm on weekends which is pretty late for a small town restaurant. When I arrived there were a few people eating, a few taking food to go, and a few locals coming in for a late dinner. Despite it being late in the evening, the buffet items were nearly all available with the exception of sushi rolls, which had a minimal selection, and only a few pieces left.
The selection of entrees was as expected, your most common items, beef & broccoli, fried shrimp, sweet & sour chicken, boiled crawfish, walnut shrimp, jalapeno chicken, pot stickers, Chinese donuts, rice, chow mien, sweet & sour soup, egg rolls, wontons, jello, cakes, ice cream and a few other other items.
I decided to try a little of everything, perhaps there was a hidden gem among the 2 dozen items on the buffet. I tried a couple pieces of sushi, an avocado/cream cheese, California roll, Philly roll, and an unknown one with crab, cream cheese & crispy onions on the outside.
Next up I tried a bowl of the sweet and sour soup, which had better flavor than expected, crunchy bamboo shoots, and a nice balanced flavor.
For my entrees I started with some kind of jalapeno, stuffed with a breading that was deep fried. It tasted exactly like it looked, like breading and jalapeno. Next up was some walnut shrimp, it was OK, didnt have any walnut, and the cream sauce on it was not very sweet. Added to this, it had probably been out for a while, as the fried breading was a bit mushy.
On to the baked seafood, which I was skeptical of, but looked like some had been brought out recently and added on top of the previous batch. The crab had good flavor, the cheese was baked until it had crisped, and it was seasoned nicely with garlic, onion, a small amount of celery. Surprisingly this baked seafood was some of the better I've had at a buffets.
For plate number 2, a large scoop of the seafood casserole, 2 cheese rangoons, an eggroll, some mushrooms and some glass noodles.
The cheese rangoons lacked much flavor, the mushrooms were decent but were kinda plain on their own, and the glass noodles were OK, but again were lacking in flavor, I failed to get any of the vegetables that were mixed into them.
One of the very last items I tried was the eggroll. I wont go into detail as far as the taste, but I snapped it in half and took a bite from the center, which I did not swallow.
So overall, it was very average for a small town buffet. The highlight was the baked crab casserole, the worst item by far the egg roll. Many items were decent, the sushi, the sweet & sour soup, but in the end, I didnt find anything that would make me drive back out there from central San Antonio. The dinner buffet was $15 +beverage at the time of this review.
