Decent Seafood, A Little Plain, But Lots Of Options.
I finally visited Little Fish Factory about a month ago. After having some pretty good Mexican food at Little Taco Factory, I was told this place was owned by the same people. You can get both Mexican and Seafood here, so I visited and tried the seafood side of things.
For my very first visit I ordered the #4 Fish & Shrimp Platter (1 Fried Fish, 4 Fried Shrimp, Cole Slaw, Fries & Spinach, with a roll) for about $12.
I was greeted at the door, they gave me time to look at the menu and ask questions, and took my order. While I was waiting for my order, I saw other tables where people were ordering plates of fish to share. Probably the #88 which is a large amount of food for 2 people, but about the same cost as 2 plates.
When my food arrived, I tried the fish first. It was cooked decently, and had a good clean flavor, a nice texture. The fish was coated in a cornmeal or bread crumb style breading, not a batter and was a more simple style fish than most places. You could easily tell the fish was better quality than many places, but It seemed very simplistic as did all the items on the plate.
The shrimp were decent, prepared the same way as the fish, and were of medium sized. As for the portions of the plate, the fries made up a large portion, the fish and shrimp were on the smaller size, but due to the fact there were 3 sides included, I didnt expect large side dish portions.
The fries were fresh, crispy and hot to the point of having to let them cool. They were your classic crinkle cut fries. The coleslaw and spinach however were my least favorite part of the meal. The coleslaw was overly plain and a little bitter, the spinach was.. well spinach, it didnt taste like it was salted or buttered at all. Id could see just ordering the fish & shrimp, or side of fries, like the table that ordered the #88 to split.
As a first visit, I ordered what was the more expensive fish, with catfish being a cheaper option, and the fish sticks being the cheapest meal option. I wanted to make sure I got a fair sampling of the seafood.
Now, if this review comes off as a negative one, you can see I still scored them an 8.0. Nothing was bad, service was good, but I felt there was nothing that set them apart from other places. I felt the food was overly simplistic, a bit plain for my tastes, and almost a southern homestyle type seafood. I guess I prefer my fish and shrimp battered and not breaded, but Im sure there are many who will love this style of fish.
Knowing the Mexican food side of this is supposedly the same as Little Taco Factory, I'll have to visit again. Because I was decently impressed by that business. The Mexican food there was unique in flavor, and Im curious if this location tastes the same.
If you live on the southside, this place is definitely worth a try. Its not extremely expensive as far as seafood goes, they have some affordable options to feed the family, and the service is good.
