Juans Was Closed, But LuLu's Was In The Parking Lot.. Why Not Give It A Try.
I drove up and parked, and the guy working the truck nearly sprinted inside. He was ready to take my order before I reached the window. There was no menu, but he said made did tostadas, tacos and gorditas. I looked inside & saw 1 large pot on the griddle, and about 6 gorditas already fried up on a rack. I ordered 2 gorditas with everything on them, and waited for the total. The gorditas were $7.50.
He had my 2 gorditas assembled and wrapped up in less than 2 minutes.. mainly because the gorditas were already fried, and the meat was in a pot. So how were they? and how did they compare to Juans (also in Devine TX) from last week?
The Gordita shell was crispy, and had good texture. The meat had decent flavor, but was more your traditional asada meat, with almost no grilled flavor or crisp edge to the meat, and the fillings of the taco were decent as well, but average. I will say the green salsa here packed more heat than the salsa I got from Juans.
None of this is to say the Gorditas werent good, I'll admit these gorditas were better than many I've had in San Antonio and would probably make my top 5. Every ingredient was good, everything had good flavor, good texture, but after last weeks experience with Juans Tacos, every gordita from this point is probably going fall short. These gorditas were easily a solid 8.5-9.
I think the gorditas were crispy despite being pre-made because they were fried just minutes earlier, why? I found Lulu's by trying to visit Juans. When I arrived in Juans parking lot, I discovered Juans closes at 7pm. In the parking lot was Lulu's truck. It was 7:20pm and I doubt Lulu's opens before Juans closes, so the shells must have been made just minutes before I arrived.
What can I say, I've eaten more gorditas in the last 2 weeks than in the last year. Where many places in San Antonio let me down, both places in the same parking lot, in Devine have served up some really good gorditas. Juan's still reigns #1, but Lulu's would easily make it somewhere in my top 5 gorditas.— Paul
