Best Gorditas I've Had Yet! This place is a must try..
This was my second time eating gorditas from Juans Tacos, my first time, I gave them a higher score, as the food was absolutely amazing. This trip my gorditas were not quite as good.
In my previous review I mentioned how the meat in the gordita had Texas smoked brisket flavor to it. It had the wood and smoke flavor, the bread was crisp and had a nice crunch to it.. the pico de gallo and guacamole was fresh, and all together It was the epidime of Mexican food and gorditas in Texas, I seriously doubted Id ever try any Mexican food that would top it.
This trip, my gordita was a little tough, the bread seemed overcooked, it was chewy and kinda hard. I wasn't sure if I had the fajita or brisket the first time, because someone brought the tacos to me, so I showed the waitress. She misidentified the item, and I was served brisket. Then I showed the photos again, and was told it was fajita.
So I ordered the fajita gordita (fajita picture if from previous review), but again, the bread was tough, and the meat this time lacked the amazing flavor it had the first time. Despite all this the gordita was still one of the better gorditas Ive had.. but the difference in my scoring between a 9.7+ is that your serving some of the best food I've ever had.. I hope I just got some leaner meat, and the end of a batch of gorditas this trip. I'll return again, hopefully getting another amazing gordita.
This was my first time seeing the building, going inside, eating inside, and seeing the menu. Theres a decent selection of meat options for all their items, but I was told the most popular is the fajita gordita. They also have a drive thru, so even if your just passing thru Devine, could exit and go over a block to order one to go.
I have mixed feelings now.. hopefully this was just a bad visit.. I've had them before.. But I still recommend trying them. Despite the lesser quality this recent visit, the food was still really good.
Gorditas are $8 if you get them all the way (everything on them)

Amazing Gorditas - Pit Flavor & Fresh Pico
Its been a while since I've had a 5 star review, and this one was surprising because it was food brought to me while I was working at a job.
I was in Devine TX, about a 30 minute drive SW of San Antonio, doing a computer repair (my daily job) when my customer offered to bring dinner from a local taco place. They ordered a beef gordita, with pico-de-gallo and guacamole for me.
I was skeptical as to what I would get, and if Id like it at all. I've never had a gordita that really impressed me, most were just so-so, lacking one thing or another, but when I unwrapped it, it looked different. The meat was not visible, almost like it was sealed inside. I took a quick photo, (not bothering to clean my lens) and then took my first bite.
I was immediately flooded with the taste of Texas BBQ. Not what I was expecting at all.. The flavor was easy identifiable. Mesquite smoked meat, with the flavor or brisket, the texture of fajita, but sandwiched in a crispy bread shell.. The mushy guacamole and pico-de-gallo upped the flavor another step, but then there was the gordita itself.
The outside shell? or should I say bread? was amazing as well, the bread was crisp, crunching as you bit into it, but still with a soft inside. The combination of textures, crunchy, soft, mushy, chewy, covered all the bases. The flavor, well is indescribable. At first I thought there was refried beans inside, but there wasnt, at least I dont think so. There was so much going on texture and flavor wise, and it was so good I didnt stop to peel it apart, and just ate the whole thing. I did stop to snap one photo of the insides before I finished it off.
This gordita put a lot of food to shame, and I will be going back.
I find myself struggling to describe this item, because I cant put it into words.. Take some of the best smoked brisket you've ever had, then take the best puffy taco you've ever had, then take the best street taco or fajita taco you've had and combine them all together.. You might have a close idea of the textures and flavors going on here..
I plan on revisiting and taking people with me.. I have been informed, these gorditas are about $7.50, also the place is really small, with about 3 tables inside, and has a pretty basic menu, (mini tacos, gorditas (5 kinds of meat), tortas, menudo, chalupas & crispy tacos.
I can only hope my first visit in person is as impressive as the food I received this time. The .2 deduction is there solely for price, as I could easily eat 1.5-2 of these as a meal. But I'll probably try 2 next time, 1 being the beef, and another being maybe carne guisada or something else..
I was totally blown away by this. You will definitely be seeing a follow up to this review..— Paul
