Great Steak Sandwich & Steak Frites
On my final evening in Florida, our culinary adventure led us to Whitney's on Longboat Key, a unique establishment housed in an old gas station, exuding a retro-modern charm.
**Diverse Menu Options **
The menu at Whitney's offers a diverse array of entrees spanning Mexican, Floridian Seafood, and American cuisine. But the simple mention of chimichurri instantly captured my attention, prompting me to order the steak frites.
**Retro/Modern Decor
**My meal started with a Mexican Coke, and while waiting for my entree to arrive I sat soaking in the laid-back ambiance of the restaurant. The weeknight atmosphere was characterized by musak remixes, burning firepits outside, and a clean 1950s aesthetic featuring spinning bar stools, tile, and pastel colors.
**Steak Frites
W**hen the food arrived, a thick, juicy steak with a generous portion of fries stood before me. Topped with the chimichurri that had piqued my interest, I eagerly dug in. The steak was a masterpiece of tender, moist, perfectly cooked medium-rare meat, with a delightful char on the outside.
The fries were a delightful surprise as well. Reminiscent of fresh McDonald's frys in the best possible way. The familiar taste was enhanced by a subtle garlic flavor, elevating the overall experience.
The plate quickly disappeared, as this steak proved to be one of the best I'd enjoyed in quite some time. The chimichurri sauce on it was decent, packed with the flavor of fresh garlic.
**Ricotta Donut Holes**
While waiting for our food, I had noticed the donut holes made with ricotta seemed to be a popular favorite among Google reviewers. I mentioned them to my friend, and we decided to order some as an end to the meal.
Freshly fried, coated in cinnamon and sugar, these moist treats contained a subtle ricotta flavor, offering a unique departure from ordinary donuts.
**The Next Day (Steak Sandwich)**
I thought the meal had ended, but the next day my friend told me to eat the other half of their steak sandwich. I heated the sandwich in the air fryer, to keep the bread crisp. It was also a highly rated item, but this had sat in the fridge overnight, and I didnt expect much. In fact I thought I had made the right selection with the steak frites the night before, but that was about to change.
The sandwich had amazing flavor, and was one of the best steak sandwiches I've ever had. If I dined at Whitney's again, I think I'd order the steak sandwich. It was one of those items that once you eat, makes you stop trying other items on the menu. The steak was moist and tender, the carmelized onions were packed with flavor, the horseradish added just a little kick to the sandwich that elevated it to yet another level, and the melted jack cheese held everything together.
**Final Thoughts
**What can I say about Whitney's? I've tried 2 items, and both were excellent. I think the steak sandwich has earned a spot on my Best Food Anywhere list. However Im curious if the sandwich is as good out of their kitchen as it was from the air fryer. It is possible the toasting of the bread, and soaking of the juices over night changed the flavor. But I do know one thing, when I return to Florida, Whitneys will be on my list of places to eat at again.
