Everything Tasted Fresh, Portions Were Good, Lunch Specials Are A Decent Deal
Not sure if I've ever eaten here before, but Lung Fung has been around a long time. I recently visited to give it a try, and was pleasantly surprised.
The lunch specials are good until 4pm, which was nice because I was having trouble finding anywhere that was even open at 3pm on a Monday. The lunch specials are $7.99 at the time of this review, and the same dinner plates are $9.99 after 4pm. Since it was my first visit I decided to go with a lunch combo. I ordered the Mongolian beef and the Garlic beef. All lunch specials come with fried rice, soup and an egg roll.
I saw the huge plates of food coming out to the tables around me.. and since I had ordered the combo, had no clue what to expect. Service was fast, and my order was out in about 5 minutes. The combo however seemed to be equal or less food than the single item lunch specials, and with an upcharge of $4 on an $8 lunch I expected at least an equal to larger plate of food. It was still a decent portion, but I feel the better deal would have been the single item.
The garlic beef had good flavor, it was actually spicy, and tasted fresh. The spiciness was different from other places, and Im not exactly sure what it was, but it was different. The mongolian beef was good as well, I ordered it spicy, but it was significantly less spicy. I also seemed to have less flavor despite all the vegetables, which was surprising. Of the 2 entree's the garlic beef was the winner.
As for everything else that came on the plate, the egg roll was good, but not amazing, the rice was good, not bland and had good flavor, but the egg drop soup was very good. I had seen other peoples reviews about how much they liked the egg drop soup, and it was some of the better egg drop I've had. It came served with a large fresh fried wonton that had to be cracked into pieces. The fresh wonton is really what made the soup, and its presentation something different.
Prices were good, lunch runs late here, entree options are plentiful, and service is super fast. My only complaint would be the combo portion size vs the regular size. Overall it was a good experience.
Its definitely a decent place to grab lunch if your in the area. Lung Fung is located near the intersection of WW White and Rigsby on San Antonio's SE side. The building sits sideways on Lakewood Dr. The exterior wall is a stone wall that looks like a castle wall, with a bright blue roof.
I would compare this restaurant to China Star on Babcock. Very similar in flavor, portions, and pricing.
I'd recommend giving it a try, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit.
