  • ★★★★★ Tortilla Soup Liver & Onions Cinnamon Ice Cream Ice Cream Sundae Onion Rings Visited Nov 11, 2023

Jims is an old San Antonio Favorite. Its Like IHOP but more Homestyle.

I've been eating at Jim's for decades now, and tried a lot of items on the menu. The items I regularly eat at Jims are the Ol Smokey burger, Onion Rings and the Tortilla soup. But this trip I got a surprise item I didnt know even exited. (Keep reading)

On this visit I ordered the liver and onions, just because Its not something I get very often, onion rings, and some tortilla soup.

The onion rings at Jim's are skinny thin shoe string style. They are crisp and are some of my favorite anywhere. The ol smokey burger my favorite burger here is topped with baby rays BBQ sauce, sliced pickles and diced onion. The liver and onions is served as 2 slices, with a pile of grilled onions, and 2 sides. You must ask for brown gravy if you want it.

I ordered the tortilla soup as an appetizer, and it seemed to contain a little less ingredients than usual, but they may have just not scooped as much from the bottom of the pot, its usually pretty consistent. It contains diced tomato, shredded cheese, shredded chicken, and crisp tortilla strips.

All my food was about average, portions same as they have been the last couple years, and service was about the same as well. Jim's is a decent place to grab a meal, I just wish they would go back to 24 hours.

Now the surprise item, which was pretty much my reason for me writing this review. I don't review too many places that are commonly known. Someone eating dinner with me said, "Hey have you ever tried the cinnamon ice cream?, its pretty good." I don't think its even on the menu.. We asked our waitress and they said they had it.. So we all ordered a bowl.

The single scoop bowl came out, filled with a yellowish ice cream that had specks of brown cinnamon giving it a tanish color. I took a bite and it really resembled eating vanilla ice cream on a slice of apple pie. The cinnamon flavor was there, not spicy or hot, just very apparent. It was an interesting item I had no idea existed. Im not sure if its seasonal or not. But if this sounds good you should probably go durring the fall season to try it. Im not sure how long it will be around.

If your not familiar with Jim's, I can only describe their food as old fashioned, homestyle dinners. Jim's has been around for decades, a spin off of Frontier burger. Its decent food, the items I listed are the ones I specifically go there for because they have better flavor than most places. So if you like tortilla soup, or BBQ sauce burgers, you should give it a try if you havent already.
