Jalapeno Chicken Fried Steak & Other Items
I first ate at Radicke's about 25 years ago when they had a location in Atkins TX (1604 & Hwy-87). The chicken steak back then was amazing. A few years later that location closed. I later found the WW White location, which closes daily at 2:30pm, but my (first) visit to that location was disappointing. The jalapeno flavor was weak, and it just didnt live up to memory. I returned this week after about 4 years to give it another try.
You get old fashioned, small town, diner service at Radicke's. The insides take you back to restaurants of the 70s and 80s, and the menu is filled with southern dishes. The food is great if your looking for homestyle southern food, but I specifically visited for the jalapeno chicken fried steak. If you like pickled jalapenos then this place is for you.
This visit was a reversal flavor wise, where my previous visit lacked any jalapeno flavor, my steak this time had a tons of jalapeno flavor. The sourness & heat because of the amount of jalapeno in it, was a bit more than I wanted., but this time the flavor was there. They must be using food processed pickled jalapenos, because you can see them between the batter and meat. The steak has a nice crisp batter, with a layer of jalapeno beneath it. The meat isn't soaked in it, because it tastes like regular meat when you peel the batter back, and the peppers are not visible on the outside, which gives it a unique texture and flavor, because everything is kept separate.
The onion rings were really good, different from other places, and fried in what I can only describe as a Cajun style batter. The mashed potatoes were fresh, had good flavor, chunky, with skins, and if they weren't made from scratch they fooled me.
For the jalapeno fans out there, they offer jalapeno mac & cheese, jalapeno spinach, jalapeno fried chicken, jalapeno pork chops, and a few other items in addition to the regular menu.
The flavor this visit was closer to what I remember a long time ago. I just feel the balance of batter and jalapeno were a bit off, and after this most recent visit, I'll return again, much sooner.
Service was pretty good, food came out decently fast, and the jalapeno chicken fried steak was only $11.75. Overall it was a good visit, my only criticism other than the jalapeno flavor overload this time, was that my soft drink was weak.
I think I'd recommend this place to anyone, if you like chicken fried steaks, spicy food, homestyle food, fried chicken, this is a good place to get it. I just wish they were open for dinner.
