Chicken Fried Steak
**It had probably been 20 years since I had eaten at Sammy's in Castroville TX, and I honestly didnt remember much about my previous visit. Some friends and I were looking for places to eat in the area, and late on a Sunday we only had a few options.
This place is basically old fashioned all the way thru. The building, the interior, the menus, and the food selection. You can almost feel the fact this place has been around for several decades.
The menu consists of your basic homestyle dishes, open face roast beef, enchiladas, chicken fried steaks, fried chicken, fried fish, salads, onion rings, corn, mashed potatoes ect.
The chicken fried steak seemed to have a lot of good reviews on Google, so I decided to give it a try. I've been a roll trying chicken fried steaks lately and figured Id see how this one compared.
The chicken fried steak was decent, not anything overly different, tender, and seasoned well, with a crisp breading, and country style gravy on top. The steak came with 1 side and a salad or 2 sides. I ordered mine with a side of seasoned fries and fried mushrooms.
The seasoned fries had really good flavor, were battered lightly with a golden brown coating that possibly contained parsley. I really enjoyed the fries. The fried mushrooms however were a bit bland, not a lot of flavor, and seemed to be battered completely plain.
Service was pretty good, and the food came out decently fast. It was about 7pm on a Sunday and there wasn't much of a crowd when we arrived.
Everything was decent, I while I didnt eat anything that overly stood out on this visit. Prices were fair and service was good. I would definitely consider trying another item, perhaps the fried fish.
I got a peek inside the kitchen from a side window that faces the parking spots, and could see fresh produce stacked up in the kitchen. The kitchen appeared very clean, and it was apparent from the flavor of the food, that everything was made from scratch, but this just supported the assumption.
The menu also boasted that all items that used bread were sourced from the Habys Alsatian bakery located across the street.
I would say Sammy's is a decent place to eat if your in the area, and looking for a good place to get a homestyle meal.
