A Steakhouse with Wild Game & Other Harder To Find Menu Items

Rocky mountain oysters are hard to find in central Texas. So when someone told me this place had them, I made the drive down to Falls City, about 40 minutes from San Antonio to check it out.

Shorty's is a country homestyle steakhouse. When I arrived, the place was full of locals. Several people were ordering steaks, and it seemed the 24oz Sirloin for $25 was the popular item. But they were sold out before lunch was over. They started serving people 2 12oz steaks, and then ran out of those, and before I left were nearly sold out of every steak on the menu.

I already knew what I was going to order, but saw that the menu had a wide variety of items, including things you will only find at a steakhouse in the country. I saw mentions of rabbit, frog legs, gizzards, and sweetbreads (which are BBQ'd organs).

Rocky mountain oysters also known as calf fries are pretty common up in Oklahoma and Colorado, but chances are you've never come across them in Texas. I have found them in Dallas & Amarillo, and for those of you who don't know what they are, many menu's will have descriptions that say "if you don't know what this is, don't order it", or "these aren't oysters".. Basically, these are fried testicles.

This was the first time I've seen them listed as an entrée rather than an appetizer, so my plans to order them along with a plate had to change. It was all or nothing. The portion was rather large, these were cubed, battered and fried. Other places I've had them, serve them as discs, or strips, but not usually thick pieces. I felt these were a little less tender due to the thickness of the pieces, but overall weren't too bad.

Despite being hard to find, I'd probably try another item if I return. Unless I could get them as an appetizer. The sides that came with my meal were fantastic however. The meal started with a salad, which was very fresh, a huge bowl, and had crispy noodles on top. When I was asked what kind of dressing I wanted, I was brought a whole squeeze bottle of thousand island, which seemed to be home made and was some of the best I've had. The salad alone had already started to fill me up.

I got the green beans with my meal, which had bits of pork boiled with them. They had excellent flavor and I wouldnt hesitate to order them again. The fries were battered & seasoned, a large portion, and were pretty good as well.

Service was good, prices were fair, the menu was impressive with a wide selection of items, and decently priced steaks. Side dishes, and salads were excellent. So I think its worth a return trip, next time for a steak.
