People Were Hyping This Place Up. Had To Try It For Myself

Was my first time ordering from Pepes, but a couple people I know had posted photos on Facebook, and it had been recommended in a food group Im in.

Pepe's is open from 7am to 1pm Saturday and Sunday only. I've seen posts saying they ran out of barbacoa. So I was concerned that by 9am there was going to be a line. When I arrived there were only 2 people there, but a line quickly formed behind me. I bet the lines are much longer once churchs lets out on Sundays.

While I was waiting in line, a man I assume was the owner greeted me, he was definitely the cook as well. He said the younger people working the counter were his grandkids. They were all polite, and he mentioned to them it was my first time visiting.

Although the menu only had the barbacoa listed by the pound, or taco, he told me I could order a half lb or whatever I wanted. Since it was just me I went with 1lb of meat, a pack of corn tortillas and a cup of pico de gallo.

    Everything here is separate,
1lb of barbacoa was $15.95 (enough for 10 decent sized tacos)
10 pack of corn tortillas was $1.70
    10 flour tortillas were $2.50
Pico de gallo was $1.25 (Enough for about 3-4 tacos)
    Green salsa for $1.25
    Tamales for $9.50 a dozen

The meat was kept behind the counter in a large slow cooker, where it was packaged when ordered into 1/2lb and 1lb containers. The tortillas were pre-bagged in a warmer, and the fridge had cups of salsa and pico de gallo. Service was quick, and it took less than 2 minutes for my order to be bagged up.

This place is pretty much to go only, as the restaurant only had 1 or 2 tables inside, but I saw people idling in the parking lot, probably eating tacos in their cars.

I made my tacos when I got home, and the 1/2lb container was enough to make 5 decently filled tacos. The pico de gallo was a small container, and not really enough for the 5 tacos. So if you order the 1lb, I'd recommend 2 cups of it.

The meat was super tender, only had a little bit of the gamey flavor I associate with barbacoa and it was mostly in the after taste. The meat wasn't greasy or fatty at all. I tend to like a little bit of fat in my barbacoa, but this was still pretty good.

The Pico de gallo in my first taco was mild, but the 2nd one must have had more jalapeno because it had some heat. The tortillas were fresh and hot.

Everything was really good, good enough I'd rank this place somewhere in the top 3 I've tried. I'd really have to have them side by side to put them in order, but I think it could have had a little more flavor. The meat wasn't overly greasy like some places, or gamey tasting, which is probably because it had less fatty meat in it, but at the same time some of that flavor probably comes along with the fat.

I'd buy from here again. Figure 10 tacos with all the extras is gonna be about $20. oh, and they also had a fridge full of Big Red.

Pepes is located on the southside, just off I-37 and Fair Ave.
