Best Asian Buffet Ive Been To - Korean, Japanese, Chinese & Vietnamese Items.
I've been eating at Buffet Palace for a few years now, and I don't hesitate to say, its my favorite buffet anywhere. If you notice I awarded it "Best Asian Buffet", not Chinese buffet, because they offer a wide range of food from several nationalities.
The buffet contains items from Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, & Korean cuisine as well as a few others. American items for the kids..
I had tried to type up a list, but Facebook crashed after I had been typing for 10 minutes. Instead I have attached the video, hopefully you can make out the items I dont mention in this review. Feel free to ask if you see something your curious about.
So first off, the buffet is about $16 which its pretty cheap considering the variety of items, the fact it contains galbi, sushi, and crab. The dinner buffet used to feature beef and pork galbi (Korean Ribs) but recently has only had pork galbi. The lunch buffet featured bulgogi (Korean) grilled meat, but I havent eaten lunch here recently, so Im not sure if its still on the lunch menu.
Buffet Palace is about an hour and a half from where I live and yes, I've actually driven out to it at least 4 times just to eat dinner. Everyone I've taken there has loved it.
I'll mention the best items first.. Korean Beef Cakes (like hamburger steaks with teriyaki & green onion), Okonomiyaki (Japanese fried vegetable pancakes), Orange Shrimp, Deep fried Soft Shell Crab, Pork Galbi (Korean ribs), 6 types of Sushi rolls, 4 kinds of Nigiri, 2 kinds of Hand Rolls, Pickled Kimchi Cucumbers, Pickled Daikon Radish, Pickled Beansprouts, Custard Cake, Miso Soup, Seafood Dynamite, Peach Cobbler & Vanilla Ice Cream (cinnamon & honey), & several Cheesecakes.
Its hard to write this review because I want to talk about everything. The Sushi here is pretty good for buffet sushi. Theres a pretty diverse selection, with everything from rolls with spicy cheeto dust, to handrolls with shredded crab, tempura rolls, catapillar rolls with avocado & salmon on top, and nigiri. Honestly I've only had a pieces I didnt like here. While its not the best sushi anywhere, as part of a $16 buffet it beats a lot of places that sell rolls as an appetizer and ocassionally I get a roll that is amazing.
Service here has been pretty good every visit, to the point I had a few employees pre-covid that knew me.. I'd ask to be seated in their areas,.but staff changed when everything reopened.
The food cycles out pretty quick in the evening, if you dont see something, give it a few minutes, the items dont stay empty long, but the really popular stuff empties out fast as well. This also means your almost always getting fresh items. The Galbi is one of those items, as is the fried crab.
I love the unlimited Korean sides on the salad island. The cucumber kimchi, the radish, the bean sprouts, and the fact that they have had gochujung (korean pepper paste) on the buffet for a long time now, (but wasnt there my most recent visit). This last visit I got to try a pinkish jelly like hot sauce.
If your looking for more standard Chinese food, yes, they have that as well. Wonton soup, cheese rangoons, spring rolls and egg rolls, fried rice, beef & broccoli, Chinese donuts, salt & pepper shrimp, and other items.
I'm not sure how many items are on this buffet. I counted 89 on my video. But I can almost guarantee you will find something you will like. I've tried AYCE Sushi Buffets, AYCE Korean BBQ's and Chinese Buffets in a half dozen states. Never once have I come across another place with this type of selection. The closest was maybe half this size in Hot Springs AR.
The food quality here beats the majority of buffets as does the selection. I highly recommend you give it a try next time your in Austin, TX. Its about a 8 minute drive off I-35, in the southern part of Austin.
