  • ★★★★½ Beef Pad Thai Chicken & Rice Soup (Khao Tom Gai) Visited Jul 2, 2023

Lunch Portions were Large, Flavor Was Better Than In The Past.

It had been a while since I had visited Saeb Thai, so while I was working in the area, I decided to grab lunch.

The food on this visit had surprisingly improved. I had already rated them about an 8. But I found the food this visit to be closer to a 9.

I will start off by saying I ordered a medium hot, and the food was spicy. I eat crazy stuff, ghost chili's and scorpion pepper sauce, Thai hot at some restaurants, habanero sauce, and I've done spicy food challenges.. The medium here is close to the hot at other San Antonio restaurants. So order your spice level carefully. The menu also has a disclaimer that orders are final, no refunds due to spice level.

Now that thats been said. I ordered the Pad Thai Beef lunch special and a Coke. As I waited for my food I noticed the restaurant had muzak versions of pop songs playing.. Someone at another table started singing along with it..

I was bought a bowl of chicken and rice soup while I waited. The soup was interesting because it was the first time I've ever had chicken and rice that had a sweet and sour flavor to it. It wasnt bad, I rather liked it, as sweet and sour generally has large vegetables, and this was just rice, ground chicken, and cilantro.

The food came out decently fast, after maybe 12 minutes. There was maybe 5 other people dining at the time, and people placing & picking up to go orders.

The portion for lunch was a full size portion, the peanuts were set off to the side, the meat was fully cooked and the noodles were well done, not to the point they begin to brown and the sauce starts to carmelize, but towards nearly to hat point. The flavor was very good, and the spice level intensified as I worked my way thru the decently sized plate. The one thing I was a bit disappointed by was the plate did not include a spring roll, like many other places around town have on their lunch specials.

The food was good, better than in the past, the portion size was decently large, I struggled to finish the entire place, the spice level was a bit on the high side, but overall the meal was very good.

I wouldn't hesitate to grab lunch here again. I will have to move their rank upward in my main pad thai list. If you havent tried this place you probably should. I may have to explore some more of the menu.
