    Basic Tex-Mex

    This was my first time eating at Oblate cafe, despite driving past it my entire life. It was finally time to give it a try, but I could not find solid information on lunch specials, what the prices were, what was on special each day, or when lunch starts and ends. Im not sure they still have them.

    When I arrived at 2:30, there was no chalk board, but there was one propped up behind the register. It appeared to have breakfast specials on it, I could not see one with lunch specials.

    I ordered off the regular menu, and decided to get the 2 cheese enchilada plate with a beef puffy taco, so I could get the main items I generally review at Mexican restaurants.

    We were served complimentary chips and salsa, and the salsa was pretty good. It had medium heat, it tasted fresh, and had good flavor.

    My plate came out and right away I noticed the gravy and cheese. The gravy or sauce here was a dark red chile color. The cheese was super bright, melted decently but not browned or blistered on top.

    I tried the enchilada first, it was decent, not great, not bad, just kinda average. The gravy was a chile powder based gravy, but wasnt overly strong. I thought to myself it could have used some onion or something, as it lacked something flavorwise. Then I tried the spanish rice. The rice was again decent, not overly flavorful, and then the beans, again, decent, not bad, but just average.

    The puffy taco looked pretty decent, I picked it up and took a bite. It had a thicker shell than many other places, the outer layer was crisp and flaked off, while the inside layer was still doughy. The meat had decent flavor, and it was topped with shredded cheese, lettuce and tomato. I poured some of the salsa on it, and It was decent, better than some places, but not in my top 5.

    Regular menu prices were average compared to Mexican restaurants around San Antonio with plates ranging from $8-13. The cheaper being the crispy taco, or 2 cheese enchiladas plate, and the more expensive being the combo plates of enchiladas and fajita or tacos.

    My food came out decently quick, portions were fair, and service was good.

    So my opinion of Oblate Cafe? Very Average. I feel everything about it was average, the atmosphere, the food, the prices, the menu selection, the portion sizes. While nothing stood out, there was also nothing that would dissuade me from visiting again to try the lunch specials assuming they have them. Old photos showed a chicken mole or mole enchilada, as the Friday lunch special.
