Favorite Mushroom Swiss Burger - Skinny Onion Rings Are Usually Good
I've been eating at Babes, the Fredricksburg Rd location primarily, since the 90s. My favorite item has always been the mushroom swiss burger.
The food is generally consistent but I did have a bad experience on one of my most recent visits to the O'connor location. However I returned to the location a month later and the food was good.
I gave 4 stars only because I feel the onion rings have declined in portion and quality over the years. A basket of them used to be a loaf, and you had to peel them apart from each other. The large order now is much smaller, and while they still have good flavor they arent as good as they used to be.
As for the mushroom swiss burger, its juicy, your hands will smell like greasy grilled meat when you leave. The burger has excellent flavor, the mushrooms are still a bit stiff, but tender, and everything has a good old fashioned griddle flavor to it. Its probably my favorite mushroom swiss burger anywhere.
I cant forget to mention the honey mustard in a squeeze bottle, which I highly recommend. I put it on everything, including the onion rings. Don't knock it until you try it. I've converted many a person. Its sweet, its tangy, its great on the rings, and burgers.
Prices aren't bad, portion sizes are decent, but the burgers arent overly large. The atmosphere is a 1950's burger joint, meets country bar.
Average cost per person is about $14 for a Burger combo with soda. They do have other items, pizza, chicken strips, salads, & nachos. But I've never tried anything but the burgers.
