Average BBQ at Decent Prices
This was my first visit here, I was working in the area, and decided to give it a try. While approaching the register I noticed a printed sign saying they were featured on Texas Monthlys "Best BBQ Joints" list a few years back, so I was optimistic this would be a good meal.
Everything here is sold by weight, so I ordered 1/4lb moist brisket, and 1/4lb spicy sausage, a side of potato salad, and some pickles and onions.
My food was plated and I was seated in less than 3 minutes. So lets start with the most important item, the brisket. Well, I was less than impressed, the edge with the bark was pretty good, but as you ate towards the center of each slice the meat became dryer, and less flavorfull. The edge not only had the bark, but also a layer of fat which greatly improved the flavor. I asked for "moist" but felt like this was half way between lean and moist. It was sliced semi-thick, and the 1/4 lb portion was about 4 smaller length slices.
Next up was the sausage, this was surprisingly good, the spicy does have a kick to it, but its not overly hot. A 1/4lb of sausage was a decent sized serving. I'd compare this to some of the sausage I've got from places that specialize in sausage in the Austin/Elgin/Lockhardt area.
Now for the potato salad. It was decent, I usually dont like potato salad with mustard in it, but this had just enough to give it flavor, but not so much it was overpowering or tangy.
I almost forgot the BBQ sauce. It was very liquidy, not thick at all, you almost had to submerge and soak your meat for a second, or it would just run off. It had decent flavor, kind of a tangy sweet sauce with crushed black pepper, it had a little spice to it. It wasn't bad, but wasn't overly flavorful either.
So all in all, it was decent BBQ, but not one of my top 10. Would I eat here again? probably if I was in the area, Pearsall does not have very many places to eat and while the BBQ wasnt amazing, it was decent, especially the sausage. It also didnt break the bank. They also had peach cobbler & ice cream which I did not try (in the photos).
