The Puffy Taco Plate Is Huge, For $14.50 Its A Bargain. Includes 2 Cheese Enchiladas As Well.
This was my 1st visit to La Fiesta Patio, I had driven past it many times and mentioned it to others who said it was good. Today I went back to one of my favorites, Garcias, but apparently they have gained popularity and there was nearly a 1 hour wait, so I drove 5 minutes to La Fiesta Patio to give it a try.
I knew right away what I was going to order, the puffy taco platter ( 2 puffy tacos, 2 enchiladas, chili con carne, rice and beans, and avocado salad ).
I was seated right away, but then nothing. When my waitress failed to appear, another waiter brought my chips & salsa. After a few more minutes he took my order and brought my drink. 12 minutes after being seated my waitress came to take my order. When I informed her the waiter had already done it, she went to the register to complain that he waited on her table.
From this point forward service was decent, but not great. A fresh drink was brought when my first reached the half way point.
While waiting I ate the chips and salsa, which were pretty good. The salsa tasted like it had roasted peppers in it, it had a little heat, but not much. I saw a newspaper article from Houston that appeared to be a few decades old, talking about a salsa competition. I assume they won an award for their salsa at some point in the past. Right beside that article was a San Antonio newspaper clipping about "puffy taco invasion".
My food came out about 10 minutes later. The amount of food brought to my table for 1 $15 plate was pretty large. I had already been served a bowl of chips and salsa, my 2 puffy tacos came on 1 plate, the enchiladas rice and beans on another, a bowl filled with lettuce, guacamole and tomato, and aa warmer full of corn tortillas was brought as well.
I tried the enchiladas first. The flavor was good, I wondered about the chili con carne before it was brought out, but it was pretty decent. The cheese was fully melted, but was a bit of a sharp cheddar. They informed me when ordering the enchiladas contained cheese and onion. The onion inside was diced but still a bit crunchy after cooking and definitely had a strong flavor, so if your not a fan of onions, make sure to specify no onion when ordering. Next up I tried the rice, it had good flavor, wasnt mushy or bland, was fluffy and tasted like it was made with chicken broth.
Then I tried the puffy taco, it was fresh from the fryer, the shell was a bit soggy, and greasy. The flavor of the shell was a bit odd, and I didnt necessarily care for it. I ate part of the taco and went back to the enchiladas. I later returned to the puffy taco which had stiffened up a bit after cooling, and the odd flavor had gone away.. I think it was the hot oil giving it the flavor. The taco actually tasted way better once it had cooled a little and the shell had gone from soggy and soft to a bit crispy.
The portion of guacamole was decent enough I put some on both puffy tacos, and still had a little to eat on some of my chips.
Once I was done with the meal, I had noticed a whiteboard advertising margaritas and sopapillas. I asked the waitress about the sopapillas since they werent on the menu anywhere. She confirmed they had them, and I ordered a plate of them. They were available as a full order of (4) or half order of (2). They came out after about 5 minutes, were average size, had cinnamon on top, and honey drizzled on the plate beneath them. I bit into one and noticed right away these were a bit dense, one side was very thin, the opposite side was thick. My favorite sopapillas are nearly even on both sides thicnkness wise, and semi thin, so these didnt win any awards, but were decent non the less.
Overall it was a good meal, I would return again. The enchiladas were definitely tex-mex style. The flavor was good, the food came out hot and prepared properly, portions were large, prices weren't bad, Google still had their old prices from pre-covid/inflation. The plate I ordered used to be $10.50, its now $14.50. But even at the new price the amount of food was well worth the money.
I would recommend giving it a try, I'd probably put it in my top 10 Mexican restaurants in San Antonio.
