**I ran across this place while searching for BBQ places all over Texas. Surprisingly I had not heard anyone I know mention this place. Its actually one of the oldest restaurants in Texas, opened in 1882, and had 4 locations in the Austin, Hutto, & Bastrop area.
I made the trip last weekend to give it a try with some friends. We ate at the Elgin (original) location located about 10 minutes east of Austin on Hwy 290.
I'll start of by saying the prices here seemed a bit on the high side, but the amount of food I got on the $22, 3 meat plate was nearly 2 meals. I took a small box to go at the end of my meal, and the quality of the BBQ here justified the price which is actually in the middle area pricewise for BBQ restaurants now.
The restaurant was pretty good sized, it has a meat market, a bluebell ice cream counter, a souvenir store, and the restaurant counter. When we were done eating we browsed the place for a few minutes.. All the BBQ they make is also available raw in packages.. They even had some bulk packages on sale.
We got in line, and browsed the menu board which was a bit confusing as the prices had +2.50 and +4 next to them. We were told these were brisket upcharges. So if you order 1 meat, and its just brisket, the plate is $4 more. 2 meats, 1 brisket, $2.50 more. ect.. But the portion sizes here are pretty large, except on the brisket. So I imagine if you do the 1 meat, or a double brisket, its going to be a good portion, but on my 3 meat place it was not a huge amount.
All of us ordered brisket as one of our meats, but thats where the common orders ended. I ordered a 3 meat plate, with 1 full size rib, sausage & brisket, my sides were mac & cheese, with coleslaw. My friends ordered beans and potato salad with theirs, one had the baby back ribs. We also ordered a sausage slammer on the side.
The brisket was super tender, to the point it fell apart when you stabbed it with your fork. It had a good bark on the outside, and good smoked flavor. They had 2 BBQ sauces in heated containers to choose from, original and bold. The original was a bit weak and watery to my taste, but I liked the bold which was darker, spicier, and had more pepper in it.
The mac-n-cheese was great, you could tell it was home made, it contained milk and real cheese as it had that lumpiness to the cheese and the texture of the baked milk. I'm sure it was baked as well, because there was a layer of cheese that had a crisp browned top as well. It was some of the better mac-n-cheese I've had.
The coleslaw was just OK. Not one of my favorites, nothing really unique about it, It wasn't bad, but It was my least favorite item.
My pork rib was decent, tender, had a nice skin of seasoning on it, and was easily cut from the bone even with plastic utensils. I felt it could have had a bit more flavor, but was pretty good.
The sausage was good. It wasn't spicy, but it was juicy, the skin wasn't tough, it had good flavor without any sauce, and the portion of it was pretty large on this place.
Last up the sausage slammer, we saw pictures of something that appeared to be a jalapeno slice, with cheese in the center of some pork meat. Not sure what their process is for making these, but its basically a large sausage with the pepper and cheese in the middle, seasoned on the outside and then BBQ'd. All I can say is the sausage slammer was good. I'd recommend the brisket first, and then it would be a toss up between the regular sausage or the slammer.
Everyone at my table agreed the meal was great. One commented it was some of the best BBQ they've had.
I will definitely be visiting again, maybe one of the closer locations to San Antonio, although only maybe 20 minutes closer.**
