Super Cheap Burgers, Fried Fish, Fried Pies, Chicken & More with Great Flavor!
This was my 2nd time visiting Che's Chicken. I just recently tried it despite having living just 4 miles from it my entire life.
Don't let the outsides scare you away, this place has some great burgers and chicken. The place looks like many of the old 1950's burger stands that are still in operation today. Patio area out front under a tin roof, walk up window with a concrete slab, parking around the edges. Nothing fancy, just a small building that is easily driven past, as I did for decades.
It wasn't until I saw 2 or 3 people mention this place recently, and the loss of Floyds Dairy bar that I decided to give this place a try.
On my first visit I did something I don't normally do, and thats order something from the menu the place isnt known for. I ordered the fried fish. Now I did ask the lady at the window what sold better, the chicken, the burgers, or the fish? she said everything sells about the same. I didnt believe it, but decided to go with the fish.
The fried fish and onion rings were great, the fish was very similar to the square tortilla crusted fish Luby's sells. I ordered the 2 piece combo with onion rings. The fish was crispy, moist inside, had good flavor, the crust was great, the tartar sauce good flavor, overall not bad for a little burger stand.
The number of people ordering and picking up food was crazy, never less than 3-4 people waiting. But orders come out in less than 10 minutes.. and yet the line built as quick as it emptied out. They have pagers so you can wait in your car.
Now for todays trip. I arrived yet again to 3 cars waiting, and 2 people in line. I ordered a 2 piece mixed chicken & roll for $3.59 and a Che's burger for $2.59. Total $6.29 after tax. 10 minutes later I had my food.
I ate in the car, and started with the burger. The Che's burger which is the smaller burger, comes fully loaded, with tomato, onion, mustard, lettuce, & pickle. It was very similar to a Floyds burger. I'll say it, Id rather have these over Burger Boy, or Whataburger. It wasn't overly greasy, and had good flavor. The meat patty was probably a 1/8 lb, not a huge burger, but they do offer a full size one for $1 more, and a double for $6. However this was just an attempt to try as much of the menu as possible, not to fill up on any single item.
Now for the chicken. It was crisp, with steam coming out from the crust, the crust was very similar to Bill Millers as was the flavor. Comparing Bill Millers to this, I'd say Che's is a bit greasier, and not quite as crispy, but also less batter. I not a big fried chicken fan, and don't eat it often, but I nearly finished my 2 pieces after having ate the burger. I'd put this chicken right up there with Church's Chicken or Bill Millers. Nothing really to be said about the roll, it was just your average roll.
The menu is pretty diverse, I still have plenty to try, jalapeno poppers, okra, deep fried apple pies (3/$3), fries, chicken gizzards, and a few other items. Definitely worth a try if you like this kind of place. I'll definitely be returning, the prices are hard to beat and the food is good. Plus I live 5 minutes away.
I did not rate atmosphere here, because theres literally no where to eat but your car. This is a to-go restaurant.
