Good Burgers, Good Prices. A Whataburger Rival
I've eaten at a few Blakes Lotaburgers over the years. I tried my first burger at the location in Espanola, just north of Santa Fe New Mexico. Lotaburger is a New Mexico chain that opened in 1952, and back when I tried it the burger in the mid 00's, the fries, burger, wrappers and many other things looked so much like Whataburger it was amazing.
Since then I have tried the hatch chile (new mexico style) lotaburger, and a few other items they offer, and eaten at the Carlsbad location as well.
The hamburgers are very similar to Whataburger in flavor and texture, so much so that Id really like to get 2 of them side by side for a taste test. Lotaburger offers regular and seasoned fies, and the regular ones are you guessed it, very similar to Whataburger.
So what sets this place apart? not a lot, Its basically the Whataburger of New Mexico. The 2 chains opened within 2 years of each other 1950 & 1952. Whataburger has expanded into NM, and Lotaburger has opened 2 locations in El Paso.
So what do I think comparison wise, well without a side by side taste test, Im gonna say Whataburger beats them by narrow margin. But Blakes has the green chile lotaburger burger, and that burger beats any of the green chile burgers Whataburger has offered. The seasoned fries are a welcome change from the plain ones, so I get those sometimes.
While writing this I realized Roswell, NM has both Whataburger and Lotaburger, and my next trip up, Im gonna buy 1 of each. Maybe I can split them with whoever Im traveling with and we can do a taste off.
But if you ever pass one, and you love Whataburger you should give it a try.
