Nearly Authentic German Food, Live Entertainment & A Beer Garden Atmosphere.
I started dining at Krause's about 2 years ago, and it was instantly my favorite place for authentic German food. Over the years I tried places in San Antonio, Fredricksburg & Boerne, some have since closed, and was left disappointed nearly every time.
Krauses is located just 1 street over from the round-a-bout in downtown New Braunfels. The restaurant has indoor, outdoor, and beer garden dining, as well as a stage that hosts live entertainment in the evening.
Nearly everything I've tried here has been great, the one item that left me unimpressed was the spaetzle, but everything else I've ordered again. A favorite item that is not authentic german is the Texas Schnitzel, its a schnitzel with gravy, but the gravy is spiced with jalapenos. The best way to describe this item is a cross between a jalapeno Texas chicken fried steak, and a German schnitzel.
Another must have is the kartoffel poppers, which are basically deep fried potato balls made from shredded potato and onion, served with apple sauce and sour cream dipping sauces. These things are amazing, and a great start to a meal.
I've tried the sausage sampler, the red cabbage, potato salad, grilled chicken wings, sauerkraut, and yukon potatos, but the schnitzel and kartoffel poppers are what brings me back. The german potato salad is decent, the grilled chicken didnt really impress me, but Im not a big fan of chicken, and its not really something I look for at a German restaurant. If your eating here please try as many of the German items as you can. I can't speak as to how the catfish, shrimp, chicharrones, or pork chops are.
Service here is usually pretty good, even though this place gets packed at times. Definitely set aside a bit of time to dine here, especially if visiting during the evening or on a weekend. Your probably looking at an hour to hour and a half minimum for a meal here. Sometimes there is a wait to be seated.
Not sure what else to say about this place, other than this is some of the best German food I've had anywhere.
