  • ★★★★★ Beef Tenderloin Medalions Grilled Vegetables Fried Green Tomatoes Visited Apr 25, 2023

Amazing Food - Live Entertainment - Outdoor Seating

I'll start off by saying this is probably the highest rated item I've reviewed so far.

The Dodging Duck is located in downtown Boerne TX, about 15 minutes north of San Antonio. This quaint restaurant offers an eclectic menu containing many German influenced items, as well as a full beer & cider menu.

**Update** (9/3/23) Prices increased and theres only 1 size for the tenderloin medallions which is the small. Was $28 on this visit which used to be the price of the large entrée. Otherwise the food quality has remained the same and the service was actually better.
    **End of Update**

The tenderloin medallions are chargrilled, served on top of a bed of seasoned wild rice, accompanied by a mix of grilled vegetables (asparagus, red and green peppers, zucchini, squash, and portabella mushrooms). The grilled vegetables on this plate are honestly the best I've ever had and part of what sets this dish apart.

The meat is cooked medium rare, with a charred edge, but pink center, has the full flavor of the flame grill, and is just amazing, with a juicy tender texture.

The rice is no slouch either, I'm not sure what they season this with, its a wild rice that appears to be a mix of brown and white rice, but is definitely seasoned with perhaps some type of Mediterranean mix. All I can say is the combination of these 3 items, all prepared to nearly what I would consider perfection each on their own, makes a plate of food that I feel is possibly one of the best meals I've eaten anywhere hands down.

I've been making the trip to Boerne a few times a year to eat this item for the last 6 years.

I will say, I've tried a few other items, including the pretzel, sausage plate, & a burger, but if you want to be blown away, the tenderloin medallions are the way to go. If your vegetarian theres a "Veggie Feast" which is the same plate minus the meat.

As for appetizers, the fried green tomatoes here can't be beat. Again, the best I've had anywhere. They are sliced thick, and battered thin, with a crust that is light but has a slight crunch. Served with a lime ranch dipping sauce, and some lemon these things are amazing. I have to consciously stop eating them to save room for my entrée. 1 order is enough to split between 2 people, but you might end up slapping the other persons hand away after you start eating them. I never knew fried green tomatoes could be this good until I had them here.

What else do I recommend here? The chuck and duck. Its a layered mix of a creamy beer and hard cider. I dont see it on the latest menu, but you can ask and see if they still have it. If not, I do recommend their house made ciders.

So far I've just talked about the food, because its so great, but I cant end this review without mentioning the atmosphere. The restaurant is located across the street from the river, named after some ducks that were crossing the busy street and making their home in the front lawn. The restaurant offers indoor dining in a few small rooms, a deck with a hard covered roof, heated during the winter by gas heaters, and a ground level both paved with roof, and gravel under shade canopies that are both dog friendly. So no matter the weather theres somewhere to eat thats comfortable.

Its not uncommon to be entertained by a band, soloist or instrumentalist when dining outside in the evening either. I've seen a few performances here that were great. Christmas time is one of my favorite times to visit, eat an amazing meal and listen to some live music. Live music starts around 6pm most days.

I highly recommend trying this place. This is one of those restaurants I would drive out of my way to eat at when traveling, and luckily its right here. After writing this review I feel like I need to be dining there more. I hope if you give it a try my recommendation lives up to its hype.

**The plate used to be served with chimichurri and whipped avocado, but they have since discontinued the whipped avocado. (shown in 1 of the pictures)**
